Favorite Quote:
First dentistry was painless.
Then bicycles were chainless,
Carriages were horseless,
And many laws enforceless.

Next cookery was fireless,
Telegraphy was wireless,
Cigars were nicotineless,
And coffee caffeineless.

Soon oranges were seedless,
The putting green was weedless,
The college boy was hatless,
The proper diet fatless.

New motor roads are dustless,
The latest steel is rustless,
Our tennis courts are sodless,
Our new religion — godless.

Ever look into the mirror

And stare in disgust with who you see?

It’s not so much what you look like

It’s who you've come to be.

An almost visible burden

Weighs heavily upon your back.

This gravity is slowly growing

Causing your features to go slack.

You wonder how long you can stand it

Before your sanity leaves for good.

Do not dare lie to yourself!

You feel as though it could!

Turn away from the mirror once again

And return to the life you've been living in.

“Step back from change”, you hear doubt say

“You’re comfortable in these wounds, my friend”

You know the reason your life is pain

Despite the will to change

It’s all self-inflicted,

It’s as if you’re pain addicted.

Some sick side of you feels

A sort of enjoyment when you fall

You wish you could mute its voice

To be gone with its beck and call

But your will- power to act

Is not so strong

Despite the choice you know is right

And the choice you know is wrong

Won’t you find the strength

To break away from these bonds?

And cut ties with all the lies

That you've been drowning in for so long?

This evil will one day engulf you

And you know you cannot break away as you should

But a strong resolve ignites inside you

And you feel as though you could.

The author's comments:
This poem was inspired by the song "Feel as though You Could" by Demon Hunter. It speaks of how you can fall into a sick spiral, and how your mind can sometimes feel like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, always battling one another. There is always a choice in life, one right, and one wrong. Sometimes it's obvious which is the choice you SHOULD make, but very often, we never want to. To "Feel As Though You Could" is acknowledging the fact that you CAN break away from making poor choices, and how your life will reflect it. There is always strength in one's self to make the right decision.
