Ice Cream

Stream of air ripples down ribs
Neck strains to hold head high
Shoulders hunch, no pride in them
Poor, hungry homeless guy.
Begs, going around table to table
Just shuffling in circles as time goes by
Extends bony, chaffed, scarred and crackled palms
Clink! Goes our alms to this frail, skinny guy.
My pizza is gone, nothing but crumbs
My bagel is hard, thrown into the bin
Your stomach is hollow, deep like a bowl
I’m surprised that you haven’t caved in!
Eyes are sad, flickering hardship and trial
All you ask for is meager change
Kind hearts are hard for you to come by
Some people find you so sullen, so strange!
Dirty sports jersey, torn running shoes
Three days stubble, no weight left to lose
I’m out of cash, got none to use-
But here, have this ice cream!
He smiles at the news.
He gives us God’s blessing, the best one can earn
I’ve never seen a person swallow like that!
He licks and he smiles, gobbles it whole-
Finishes in one minute flat.
Later, he walks ‘cross the way
He passes us on his way down the street
Heading to the doughnut place-
Finally, enough change to eat.
I pray for him, wondering why
Such a sweet man would be a homeless guy.
