No Stars Tonight

My eyes scan the black sky
Listening as the waves crash by
And hope for a sign from the black
Some hope to hold and to bring back

The sea wind blows my mangled hair
And yet my eyes do not tear
From the great bowl up there
As salt wafts through the air.

I gaze at the bright light afar
Emanating from a man-made star
And think of my own city back home
Where one might spot a wishing star lone
And see myself in its shine
Stranded. The emptiness all mine.

So I came here holding out on a wish
That by the sea, with the fish
I might behold just one night
Spotted with pinpricks of light
And a river flowing across white
that my homesky can’t replicate quite.

But as I lean over the post
And gaze at the vast canvas of the coast
Dodging the rooftop, straining to see
The beauty of the universe free-

A storm blows in, leaving a trail
of clouds dusty blue and pale.

Something dies within me at the sight,
for there can be no stars tonight.
