The Great Emancipator
With a steady voice
And a want for peace,
You were not one for fighting
But when the pressure came,
You did not delay
To emancipate the crying.

Crying for freedom, equality,
but most of all for peace,
You would not rest or
Even sleep
‘til all the slaves were freed.

In the end you won,
Though you were greatly matched
One step toward Civil Rights
And a great giant step for blacks.

The Great Emancipator
Is what we call you now,
Now that scores have
Been settled,
And freedom been endowed.
