Yup'ik Internment

September 12, 2008
By Cory Kanulie, Togiak, AK

I am a Yup’ik American

And I am good at math

And I not the only Yup’ik is how to
Make Yup’ik at home
In the kitchen

I was born in Dillingham

My parents were born here in Togiak

When WWII broke out, my family wasn’t
Even born yet

What a “land of the free”

Just the way we look

They could tell Yup’ik from any other Alaskans

In 2000, I think, I saw an exhibit at UAF about the WWII Yup'ik Internment. Is there a source that will refresh my memory of this very dark chapter in our countries history?
