I had an owner once
A bright, laughing girl
She wanted to make something of herself
Thirteen, waiting for her life to unfurl

But before she could travel
The world, go and see
Nazis gained power
And she was no longer free

Forced to go into hiding
Stuck in a two-room attic
With seven others
They did their best not to panic

Patience, they tried to have
To face the coming war tide
But slow starvation and boredom they faced
Destroying their “family” from inside

Then the invasion came
And hope began to grow
“The war will be over soon,” they said
“And then our faces will be able to show.”

But only months before the end
They were found out
The Gestapo came for them
And they were taken, unable to shout

Only Mr. Frank survived
And now he too is gone
The Holocaust is being forgotten
Many too focused on a technological dawn

I am Anne Frank’s Diary
I speak through written word
And though my owner is long dead
Through me, her voice can be heard

We read The Diary of Anne Frank in school and were required to write a poem for it. This is what came out of it.
