"Never be satisfied by success, and never be discouraged by failure. Failure can be sad. But the greatest sadness is not to try and fail, but to fail to try. In the end, what matters is that you have always lived life to the hilt."

Sinful from conception,
Defiled at time of birth.
Nameless, isolated, naked
We were brought into this earth.

Lifeless from the start;
Born into a hearse.
Destined for perdition—
A condescending curse.

The vulgarity of existence,
Obscene reality.
Inconspicuously blessed,
A sure fatality.

Seeking virtuous conformity,
A title for our own,
The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost
Serve as the keystone.

The need to be absolved,
The fate to be reversed,
Hopelessly waiting pardon
In prosaic verse.

Drowning our transgressions,
In water, we are immersed.
In the name of the Triune God,
Deliver us from this curse.

The author's comments:
This was written for a class assignment where we analyzed reasons for any activity that would be difficult for another person to understand or explain. That week in Sunday School class, we were discussing Baptism and the necessity of it. This fit the purpose perfectly as many people are narrow minded to the why behind such a "ceremonial practice." I look to open people's minds with this piece as I illustrate how helpless, vulnerable, and weak we are in the big picture of life. This poem reflects who I am not only as a writer, but who I am as a person. This piece may not be perfect, but as we all know, we are only sinful.
