Setting Myself Free

A mirror made from glass stands
Staring into my still brown eyes
It wants me to set myself free
From the chains of trying to be someone that I’m not

Struggling to accept the soul that hides under my own skin
It prevents me from seeing the sun slowly rise
I’m walking in the shadow of someone else
And it hides the light that comes from my own spirit

Walking in shadows is walking in darkness
And in darkness I stumble and fall
That’s why I must set myself free
And let myself be who I really am

Maybe it’s because I’m scared that you’d laugh
If you knew who I really am
Maybe it’s because I’m too concerned about self image
To let go and live the only way I know how

And I want to set myself free
From the internal bondage that has my heart trapped
Guarded by the fear of rejection
And the thoughts of breaking my own mirror

With the ugliness that may come from my own personality
Hidden by my own still brown eyes; covered by the little smile on my face
But I want to set myself free
From the chains of trying to be someone that I’m not
