Ode to My Brother's Bicycle

You sit in the musty garage,
Only reaching sunlight when the door opens –
But never enough.

Sun used to bounce
Graciously off your shimmering
Skin,
But now,
Dust
Has taken its place.

You often
Wonder
What happened to the boy that would set you free,
The boy you set free.

He must have a good reason
For leaving you
In the dark.

You and he used to fly,
Free of
Burdens,
Guilt,
Responsibilities,
For four
Quiet
Minutes through nature’s captivating
Stillness.

You would bring him
To explore any corner of the
Universe of his thoughts,
Watching,
Waiting,
Observing
Your surroundings.

The split second
Before everything
Disappeared,
Only for new things to come
And go,
You would see
Millions of objects,
Each with a story to be told,
A meaning to be found,
For their existence,
Or anyone else’s,
For that matter.

You would show him the
Greener side of the grass,
He would give you
A penny for your thoughts.

He would bring you
To the
Moon,
And back,
Searching
For a thought,
Something magical,

An epiphany.

You would
Soar
Above reality
In harmonious unison,
Letting the subtle
Gusts
Of wind
Erase the past,
If only for a moment.

He would find perspective
With you,
Without the
Pressures
Of modern social society.

But instead of
All that,
Now,
You wait.

You reminisce.

You carry many memories,
None of which
Tire you
To think of.

The 20 minutes
Of pure
Adrenaline,
Rushing to
School,
Serving your key purpose.

You passed the
Windmills,
The wide open fields,
The large Xerox building,
And,
Best of all,
Sunrise.

You would ride to our favorite
Ice cream shop,
Past the bridge,
That,
For some reason,
Was always up.

You would bring him
To the street sale
Every Thursday.

Your companion,
The other bike,
The other kid,
Would so often be found
Riding,
Next to you.

You two would chatter,
When we all went into the woods,
On the
Dirt Path,
Next to
The hill
Separating us
From the highway.
You would watch the
Sunset
With us.

Too many
Memories,
Too many to remember.

Too many to look back at.

But,
For now,
You let the dust
Settle,
While you
Recollect
As many
Memories
As possible,
Waiting,
Until the boy comes back.
