Tension

I can feel it all around us
in the air, choking my throat
getting lightheaded, colors blur
my breath starts to slow.
It’s in the way you glance down
face so close to mine
the scratchy touch of your beard
our fingers intertwined.
The playful conversation
and when I turn away
you pull me back and I don’t resist
we both know I want to stay.
It’s in our hesitation
fueled by uncertainty and fear
we both know the past so well
but the future’s all a blur.
The dashed hopes and expectations
the opportunity’s been missed
I sigh and watch you walk away –
taking with you our first kiss.
