The Slate is Clean

The slate is clean
Forget all of what was seen
All that you had to hear
All the bottles near

Bottle caps on the floor
Screaming and yelling behind the closed door
Thumps and bumps
Later seeing mom with lumps

Marks on her neck
Whiskey on the deck
Seeing her trying to smile
Lips healing took a while

Hearing mom get beat
Had to find old food to eat
This happened everyday
Mom too tired to play

Then one day he wasn’t there
Which was very very rare
There were no more beers
But mom still had tears

That day
mom made time to play
She said she loved me a lot
And told me to stay in that spot

In the backroom she went and stayed
While I sat there and played
Later in the back room you would be
And scared of what you would see

Mom was swaying limp but swaying
Swaying while hanging
Hanging
Mom was hanging

The slate is clean
Forget all of what was seen
All that you had to hear
All the bottles that were near.
