Who I Used to Be

It’s hard to go back
To yesterday,
It’s hard to make your sadness pass,
To make it go away.
All I want is someone to
Come and take your hand,
Sometime to care, to love you so,
Someone to help you stand.
I remember your brilliant smile,
Your laughter ringing loud.
But now your words are guarded;
Your voice is lost within the crowd.
Always have I thought of you
As stronger than they assume,
I never would have dreamed you’d be
The type who dared not bloom.
You let them work their way to you
And capture your fragile mind,
They ripped you out and molded you
Into a clone of some kind.
Where is your voice, so loud and clear,
That never would back down?
Where are those eyes, so filled with joy,
The ones so big and round?
Tell me that it didn’t work,
Tell me you’re still here,
Tell me you just need someone
To break through all your fears.
Because I know I see a part of you
Show through now and then,
And all I want is to see your smile,
And know it’s true again.
I’ve been fighting this for so long, but now
Now I finally see:
Who I’ve been missing all along
Is who I used to be.
