Confinement

I can’t be me in the hallowed halls of academics…

Because I choose to bend unspoken rules…
Because I know what’s right from what’s wrong…
Because loose lips sink more than ships…
Because the good guy doesn’t always win.

I can’t be me in the hallowed halls of academics…

Because denial is far from a river in Egypt…
Because second chances are taken for granted…
Because bitter words are not easily forgotten…
Because pain-brought scars never really heal.

I can’t be me in the hallowed halls of academics…

Because children singing makes me cry…
Because roses wilt, wither, and die…
Because you are that song on the radio…
Because a poem’s simply words rewritten.

I shall never be me in the hallowed halls of academics…
