Life is the art of drawing without an eraser

As pieces of you slip through my fingers
Like a curtain closing, fade to black
The way I felt it always lingers
But I’m in no hurry to get you back

Like a curtain closing, fade to black
I step across the empty stage
But I’m in no hurry to get you back
I’ve already gone and turned the page

I step across the empty stage
While crisp, calm silence fills the room
I’ve already gone and turned the page
Forgotten feelings cease to loom

While crisp, calm silence fills the room
I grasp at distant memory
Forgotten feelings cease to loom
The things that you had meant to me

I grasp at distant memory
The way I felt it always lingers
The things that you had meant to me
As pieces of you slip through my fingers

This poem is a pantoum poem. And yes, I had never heard of that style of poetry either until my creative writing teacher introduced it to our class last year. I'm not going to go into the whole format, just because it sounds much more complex than it actually is, but it is a style of poetry based on the beauty and flow that comes from line repetition.

This particular pantoum is about the feeling of trying to get over someone leaving, whether it be a friend, a boyfriend or girlfriend, or a loved one. It’s about the loss and detachment we feel while we are still holding on.
