In a child,
innocent,
unscathed by the world
you look.

In a lover,
your soft,
sensitive
gaze
is a highway
to the soul.

In a mother,
you are
bottomless
wells
of wisdom,
drawing
buckets
of advice,
beckoning
a listening
ear.

In a soldier,
your determination
paces
throughout your
courts,
resolutely guarding
any
trace of pain.

In a prisoner,
you build
futile
concrete walls
for
shelter and security,
trying
to recreate
what's been
stripped
away.

What poor,
rash
choices
rip
away your purity,
and mar
you
with burdens
and guilt?
Who can replace your
bricks
of sorrow
and
lighten
your consuming
load?

Even in death,
when encroaching
darkness
threatens to
extinguish
your sparkle,
you still bring
unrivaled
hope,
savoring
every
remembered
look.

The author's comments:
The beauty of writing an ode is the ability to pick out an ordinary object and characterize it in a way never done before. I chose to do an ode about the eyes because people use their eyes to express themselves and give hints of who they are. I hope that once people read this poem, that they will realize that there is more to people than what comes at first glance.

Fantastic! I love this. I love the way you did the prisoner and your ending. You nailed a free-verse ode so perfectly that it made me smile. I;ve read your other works and while they are not without their flaws, they are, in there own unigue way, utterly perfect.
