Moving Day
The last
stale cardboard box
set in place.
The last
suitcase
packed up.
The last
door
locked up.
The last
light
turned off.
The cold metal door
smashed close,
separating
her from her universe
yet
again.
Hesitantly
she climbed
in to the
Explorer,
dreading
the journey
ahead.
She adjusted
her body
in every which way,
but no pose
made it
comfortable.
Her eyes
watched
through the
glass pane
as moving colors
got farther away.
The mountain
once covered
in icy snow,
open fields
of grass and
wheat melt
together.
“You’ll love Michigan”
they say to her,
but she
can’t help
resenting
them for it
as she
watches
her former
life
slip
farther
away.
