a single boot print, embedded forever
in the sidewalk, only the shadow of
what was once a substantial boot, but
now is just a faint memory to the careless
eyes of people who walk past without
ever really truly looking down to see
where their feet are planted: here now.
plastic flip flops will smack past it noisily
exposing sparkly blue toenails or
peeling, sunburned feet
the tennis shoes of joggers will
fly over it, thinking of nothing but
the next stride, the next mile
sneakers will squeak alongside it
protesting at every step
high heels will wobble unsteadily
striking the concrete with a
satisfying click at every foot fall
maybe even an occasional boot will
awaken forgotten memories but
the boot print will suffer silently
an unwilling prisoner of the sidewalk.
