Mommy, Daddy
Look at me,
Just look at me,
Look at what you've done to me

Daddy
Used to tell me
I was a
Princess

Mommy
Used to say
I would find my prince
Someday

You have corrupted my mind
Don't you see?

Daddy
Used to tell me he
Loved me
And so did
Mommy

But just
Look at me
Now

I lay here
In the cold damp
Earth

Do you love me now?

My breathing gone
My heart torn out
My cold dead body
Laying in the depths
Of the ground

I thought so!

Mommy, Daddy
Just
Look at me
Now

Can't you see what you did
To me?

An excellent poem that so eloquently portrays the thoughts and feelings of a child as she navigates through the oft rocky path between childhood and adulthood. A poem from the heart - I look forward to reading this talented young ladies work in the future. Well done Ginger.

Hello,

I wanted to explain my poem a bit because I see that I had a few remarks saying “disturbing” and I feel it is misinterpreted to reflect myself. When I write I try to put myself in various states of mind and explore emotions of all levels from what a person may feel. Teens today are under a large amount of pressure to succeed by friends, family, and our school systems. The girl in the poem represents someone struggling with expectations, perhaps even just a standard she only thinks is higher then it actually is. She struggles with the idea of meeting them but also wonders if she was to ever be flawed if she would still have been loved , appreciated, and accepted all the same by the world.

People do not want to admit that there are darker aspects of life and have always told me that my poetry was too dark and not upbeat but that is a portion of life that we as humans call a condition and it must be seen. We as a society do not want to deal with these things and think that things must not exist if we cannot see them. Feelings do exist, even though some are not always expressed. It is important in this day to cherish the ones you love, accept their differences, and know that value of it.

As for writing from a darker view I would like to remind you that many great poets and writers like Shelley, Voltaire, Poe, Bukowski, Frost, and even Shakespeare did much the same, just to name a few. In their day and age the dismal views provided a drama that drew in the masses, much like dramatic television does for today’s audience. The emotions and tragedy they brought to light are now considered by us to be genius , they dared to explore and that inspires me.

-Ginger

I love the honesty and the power in the pain the author is feeling rare from someone who is so young.
