the frailty of wax

I shot up
as light as fire smoke
and hovered where the trees
greet the sun
the clouds they danced upon the air
and flirted with the wind
but I wished the sky farewell
lest the stars beyond would beckon too-
the great and glowing jewels
are playing in the heavens
but sit so very still
to watch you reaching for a dream
that’s only real for them
so I plunged into a lake
stepped on every mountain
and let my tears flow a river
to meet the Sea of Icarus

The author's comments:
Icarus is a character in greek mythology who escaped the lair of the minotaur by creating wings sealed together with wax. He flew out of harm's way, but flew too high- and the wax melted, his wings failing him, and he plunged to his death in the sea we named after him.
