Subway Shoes

I see shoes from left to right
Formal to flip-flops
Sneakers,
Heels,
Boots
Shoes
From tiny size nine
To adults ten
Shoes of every kind
On feet of every color
On the Washington subway
People on holiday,
And rushing to work
So many kinds of people
Of every color, race, nationality,
And religion
All in one place:
The D.C. subway train
You see so many different people
Before they're on their way
You see the silliest,
Most uncomfortable sandals
That look so cool
And the safest,
Ugliest shoes
Everyone LOOKS different
But our hearts, minds and souls
Are one
We are one species, one race
She's not a cat,
And he's not a dog
If everyone could understand this
We'd all be happy
But people are stubborn
And don't like letting go
Of the past
So I guess for now I,
Among many others worldwide
Remain a reject, a social outcast
