Just Me

I am from Newark, New Jersey, in Beth Israel Hospital.
From the stomach of Tracy.
I am from old buildings, where crime was bad.
From broken elevators and tagged on walls.
I am from crying all day and night.
From drinking warm bottles and eating Gerber food.
I am from getting my diapers changed.
From me with very wet diapers and smelly ones.
Now to me growing up just a little more.

I am from celebrating my first birthday.
From receiving my first gift.
I am from my first time getting yelled at.
From getting my first pop on the hand.
I am from always being called my grandfather.
From me having his same old ways.
Now I'm just getting a little bit older.

I am from waking up early on Christmas morning.
From being surprised by what Santa bought me.
I am from meeting my first teacher Ms. Mitchell.
From being in a class with many kids and ABC's on the walls.
I am from my dad putting a basketball in my hands.
from dedicating myself to be the best basketball player I could be.

I am from middle school to high school.
From studying hard and getting a good GPA.
I am from freshman basketball team.
From someday making the varsity team.
I am from dreaming of one day making it to the NBA.
From that dream maybe becoming true.

I enjoyed this poem. My favorite lines: "I am from always being called my grandfather. From me having his same old ways. Now I'm just getting a little bit older." Keep writing!
