The older I get

The more I know mom

Her anger makes sense

And I wonder how she’s calm

I know of her struggles

To feed us each day

Her struggles to find work

To keep the cold at bay

The older I get

The more I get dad

He doesn’t want to be mean

It’s the anger that makes him bad

I get that he tries

To keep it under wraps

But he just keeps yelling

And I’m left with gaps

I wonder why mom

And I wonder why dad

Can stay so calm

And also stay mad

The older I get

The more I know love

I get why it hurts

I get how it can shove

I know how it pushes

And shoves you one way

I know that I hate it

But feel it each day

The older I get

The more I understand

The things they’d tell us

When we thought school was grand

The “Golden Rule”

The ways of respect

How I should treat others

One thing I never checked

The older I get

The more that I learn

That the world kind of sucks

And why it should burn

The older I get

I understand it all

I get why every issue

Doesn’t really seem small

This is what I learn

The older I get

Things are making sense

But not completely, just yet
