I walk down
these crowded halls
all alone.
They might as well be empty.

I avoid the eyes—
the looks of surprise—
my teachers give.
I hurry to my class
without a word.

I fake a smile,
to those who chance
to look my way.
I act as though
everything’s alright.

act.

Nothing is
alright.

Everything could never be
more of the opposite.

…but when you’re all alone—
and no one cares—
it’s just easiest to fake a smile,
and pretend…
