Wandering Again

I walk into orchestra
you sit there waiting
like I’m the center of the universe
which I'm not
not to you anyway
I take a seat next to you
pull out my oboe
pretending not to notice
your stares and questions
darting in and out
of our conductors talking
I laugh softly
at your snide jokes
your funny faces
unique only to you
we finish the song
standing to switch seats
our stands collide
I mumble a sorry
taking a seat in first
I try to focus on the solo
but its hard
when the sun of your universe
sits right next to you
I fumble on a few notes
the conductor doesn’t care
he loves me anyway for trying
sweat now forming on my hands
we all break
joining out in the commons
you take your throne
on top of the wall
your brown eyes looking down
a red cell sitting in your hands
wait
it is mine
I try to get it back
but I am too shy to take it
you look down at me
a smile playing on your lips
you toss it back down gently
as the call to come back arrives
we take our seats
next to one another
your turn now to be first
you tune
are ready
and begin to play
I feel the melody flow
out of your oboe
like a butterfly in spring
fluttering about the tulips
bright
delicate
stunning and beautiful
I wish the song would never end
as we finish practice
you gather your things quickly
but stop to wait for me
I hustle my things away
joining you outside
it is cold and dark
the night stars peering out
like eyes in the darkness
we talk quickly under the stars
like long lost friends
until you see your dad pull up
and as if the moments could never last
you leave with a wave
not noticing my heart following
directly behind you
beating
wildly
like a lunatic drum
I catch the last glimpse of you
the long cross you ware
waving as the door shuts
but if only my heart could stay
right next to me
it seems its wandered off
again
to someone
it can never be with,
not in eternity,

again...
