Why Do We Dance?

When people ask me to say what defines me the most, my answer is, “dance”. Puzzled by my response, they quickly jump to conclusions and say that I am much more than that; however, dance has a deeper meaning.

Dancers are actors without words. When we walk on stage, we can be whoever we want to be while projecting our emotions with bodily movements. Dance takes us away to a world where we can escape from reality and express our true feelings through motions. It’s an art. By instinct, we have the sound of music take as away where we become characters of our own imagination. It not only becomes our passion, but our world.

People who are not dancers hypothesize that we dance for the pretty costumes and for the hair and makeup.  As a dancer now for almost sixteen years, I can solemnly say that assumption is false. I dance because it helps express my emotions when I can’t find the right words to say it. I dance because it takes me to cloud nine.

Lastly, I dance because it is my life and something I love to do.
