Whats a prayer

Whats a prayer. Is it a plead to god? Is it a message to a lost family member? I think that you have to be desperate to make a prayer. the person who makes the prayer is just greedy and is asking god for what he/she wants. But other people use it to get a blessing from god. they use it to say thanks for what god has given them. those people are the honest people. so why do we take advantage of that. the one way we can try to talk to god and we use it to get things we cant get on our own. Why?
