The Spirit of Relay for Life

For the past two years, I have been involved with Relay for Life, which is an organization that has fundraisers to donate money to help people with cancer. One year I helped raise over five hundred dollars and the other over two hundred dollars. I raised this money by selling home-made bracelets, asking for donations online through emails and Facebook, raffling off a custom made mood bracelet, selling luminaries, joining the Relay for Life antique car show with my grandfather, and selling individual tootsie roll pops. I was very motivated in helping this organization because I know what it's like to have a family member with cancer. My grandmother, someone who is very dear to my heart, has been fighting leukemia on and off for as long as I can remember. I was much honored to help out Relay for Life because it made me feel like I was helping her in my own special way.

When we had the actual relay, I was able to meet all of the other members who joined Relay for Life to help others with cancer. Half of my peers from the high school, families from all around the county with or without family members who have cancer, people who have lost loved ones to the cancerous disease, and, best of all, numerous cancer survivors themselves were there to help support those who currently have cancer. We supported them by making homemade luminaries out of mini white paper bags and small candles. We wrote the names of our loved ones who have survived cancer, are in a fight against cancer, or have passed as a result of cancer on the front and back of the luminaries. We then lit the candles inside the bag and set them around the track in the middle of the whole event that we all walked around for hours throughout the night. We were asked to keep walking all night and to stay up all night and all day. I stayed up the whole time, walked around the track until my feet became swollen, and even danced to the music and played games with my friends to keep myself on my feet. I have never been as dedicated to an organization before like I am for this one.

Relay for Life helped me in return by opening my eyes to a larger world where it is not just me who is fighting alongside a family member with cancer. I was overjoyed to see so many others at the relay who were just as dedicated as I am. Relay for Life also made me realize that I enjoy helping others in need. I wish to take this new passion of mine and contribute it to a future career so that I can continue to help others throughout my life. I plan on earning a job within law enforcement so that I can help those who are in danger from the evils in the world.
