The hopeless hippie sits against the wall. When those passing by turn their heads to look at him all he says is, “Give peace a chance.” The man is hopeless because no one cares to listen to the message he bears. In another country there is an Amish family who love each other very much. The mother has glowing hair and transcendental blue eyes. The children play out in the backyard every day; they build forts with their imaginations. The father cares about his family very much; he would do anything for them. One day the man receives notice that the he must go and serve in the military. This happens to families everywhere. The woman is afraid she may never see her husband again. The children fear that their father may never read them another bedtime story. Why are the hippie and the family similar? Because they both know war is wrong, and these days we don’t even fight for a worthy cause; we fight because we can. War is caused by greed. Some are greedy for land, some for power, and none of these greedy war mongers will realize what harm they have done until the world is up in flames. The Amish man did go to war and he died, leaving the mother widowed with hungry children. That is the case for countless numbers of people. This is the way it has always been and will always be, unless we start stopping to listen to the hippie who carries the most important piece of advice in all of time and space; “Give peace a chance”.
