Population Problems Throughout the World

The exponential growth of the human population has brought up many problems throughout the world. Exponential growth is a quantity increased at a constant rate per unit of time such as 2% a year. The process starts off small but increases to extreme numbers because the doubling is more than the total of all earlier growth. Between 1950 and 2004 the world’s population increased from 2.5 billion to 6.4 billion! By the end of this century it is predicted that the population could be around 8 billion to 12 billion. Right now the population in the world is 6.9 billion. Having this great amount of humans walking the earth add to the growing environmental problems and economical problems. Some problems include a higher death rate because of declining health and environmental conditions in some areas, increased resource use and environmental harm in developing countries such as China, diseases, biodiversity losses, losing tropical forests, fisheries disappearing, increasing of water scarcity, pollution in the seas and oceans, and climate change. The uses of earth’s resources have also increased a great deal since the 1950s and are increasing exponentially at a rapid rate. Other people who are worried about the increasing human population are worried that if they can’t provide the basic necessities for one out of six people today, then how are they going to provide for 2.5 billion more people by 2050?

The population in America right now is around 310 million and is increasing at an extremely fast rate. The biggest problem with the increasing population problem in America is probably the baby boomers era. Because there were so many babies being born after WWII, that now there are so many retirees looking for social security. The government is losing so much money over this that it is thought that our generation, two generations after the baby boomers, will not get social security. The government is lending out so much money to the baby boomers that we will eventually run out of money, and the extra money has also been believed to be misused for other things for the government. If the government were to stop taking the money or find some other way to pay off the social security, then our generation might be able to grasp our own social security.

The Chesapeake Bay area in America has a large amount of America’s population of 18 million people! The people who live near the bay are worried for the Chesapeake Bay and the wildlife that live there. They are worried that if people continue to move here, then the bay would start to lose its beauty and eventually disappear. They have brought up laws and programs to protect the bay, but they fear it won’t be enough. People continue to pour into the bay area because it is a beautiful area. The Chesapeake Bay has so far been flexible with the increasing changes being made all around it, but one day it may be too much and the bay will “snap”.

We can all change these problems that go along with increasing of population by using methods of constraining and controlling. There are many wonderful things out there that prevent women from getting pregnant such as pregnancy pills, condoms, ect. Couples could also control themselves when they are together so that there aren’t any “accidents”. There are also some countries such as China that have a one child policy. That is the method of controlling which I don’t fully support, but if that’s what it takes then so be it. If the population continues to increase as it is doing already, then soon enough there won’t be enough land for everyone to live together on.
