An unresolved issue we suffer from in our society regarding gun control laws is that they aren’t powerful enough to protect U.S. citizens from suicides. An example of a suicide caused by a firearm was located in Louisville, Kentucky. An individual named Michael Gousha shot himself in the head with a pistol. To solve this problem, a law should be passed declaring that people with certain mental illnesses should not be able to obtain a gun unless they are on medication for their mental illness or getting help from a therapist.

I think that people with mental illnesses similar to Bipolar Disorder, Major Depression, and Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, should not obtain a gun unless they are on medication or are getting help from a therapist. Bipolar Disorder causes extreme mood swings. The mood swings can change energy levels and your ability to think. Major Depression makes people experience major feelings of sadness and hopelessness. Post-traumatic Stress Disorder causes people to experience psychological problems including flashbacks to a traumatizing event or being easily startled.

The Second Amendment of the Constitution supports gun control laws. Gun control laws are laws that control the use and ownership of guns. I don’t want to fully take away the mentally ill’s rights from obtaining a gun because that is against the Second Amendment of the Constitution. I want mentally ill people to still obtain a gun, but if they currently have mental illnesses similar to the ones above, they need to be on medication for their mental illness or has been going to therapy sessions for at least a year. The Constitution will support my law because I am still making it possible for people with mental illnesses to obtain a gun. My solution is the best solution because it doesn’t take away a mentally ill person’s right to obtain the gun, it just makes it longer for them to be able to obtain a gun. A negative side to this law is that people with mental illnesses might face discrimination.

This solution will solve the problem with our gun control laws because it will lower the suicide rate caused by firearms. Between the ages of ten and fourteen, suicide is the third leading cause of death. Between the ages of fifteen and thirty-four, suicide is the second leading cause of death. A statistical issue about suicides is that nearly sixty-two percent of deaths that include firearms are suicides.

The cost of this legislation is that mentally ill people will have to wait a long time to be able to obtain a gun. Mentally ill people will lose if this new law is passed while people with no mental illness will win. People might be concerned that this law won’t protect people under the of age 18 from suicides caused by guns. This legislation is more important than this concern because it will protect older people who are at a higher risk of suicides caused by guns.

Exceptions for this new law are people who have mental illnesses but are getting therapy. Other exceptions are people with mental illnesses like adjustment disorders and anxiety disorders because they play a small role in suicides. In psychiatric diagnoses of people who died by suicide among the general population, adjustment disorders are responsible for only 3.6% of suicides. Organic mental disorders are only responsible for 1% of suicides. There might be exceptions because some mental illnesses play only a small part in suicide.

Suicides are a big problem in the U.S., and our laws aren’t powerful enough to protect the citizens of the United States. Mental illnesses and firearms are the main causes of suicides. Solving the problem with our gun control laws will lower the rate of deaths caused by suicides and mass shootings. Delaying people with certain mental illnesses such as Bipolar Disorder, Major Depression, and Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, from obtaining a gun is a solution to this problem.
