As my grandma would always say, "Autumn fall days fly by as fast as the leaves from the trees". The sun was rising, the birds were singing, and the magnificent skyline of Dallas created a shadow over the Pettix Center, as if it were a spotlight. It was just another day out on the luminous white ice, with the smells of buttery popcorn, and the electric blue bleachers that go up for miles. I started to wobble over to the door on my ,"ice skate heels" as my best friend Bailey would say, closed my eyes and in a flash the large arena echoed my name, "Julia Roberts".
My dry cracked hands picked up my lucky "J" necklace, ruffled my bedazzled Leo, and boom my body started to glide. My routine started off pretty generic with the combination of a toe pick into a lutz. Bam! I landed my first set of jumps. The brisk breeze hit my face and all of a sudden the last thirty seconds of my music from my favorite movie The Titanic began to play. My bright blue eyes began to water, “this is it” I said quietly under my breath. I slid by the panel of judges looped into the center of the arena and landed my triple axel. At last I glanced up into the booth to see my grandma with her small little thumbs up. Cheers from left and right surrounded me giving my cheeks a little pink spot.
If my mind could have said these words in this moment I know exactly what they would be hurry up, this Beethoven song needs to end, and I think I’ve got it. Finally the announcer came out on the ice. His deep masculine voice started this dragged on scripted speech that clearly I didn't care about at all. My eyes were glued on the gold trophy reflecting onto my silver blade. At last the announcer began to call the top three, “In third place…” He was trying to be funny with this long dramatic pause but in reality I just wanted to go look at the sheet myself. At last he finally announced “Brooklyn Tigges”. I felt a sigh of relief, my best friend Bailey squeezed my sweaty palm so tight that it felt as if it were numb. The announcer began again, “and in second place is...Bailey Wimingham and lastly first place is…….Miss Julia Roberts”. Bailey and I started to jump for joy. Her shaken voice began to yell, “We finally made it to state after all of these years!”.
Later that evening my family and the Wiminham’s went out to dinner at this fancy restaurant downtown called Giovani. It wasn't like anything I've ever seen before it was on the hundredth floor, the restaurant moved around in a circular motion, and the view of downtown was stunning. I started to walk towards the host stand and all of a sudden my foot tripped along the lamp cord. Whoops I shouted. It was so dark it was almost impossible to see. Finally we were led to our grand table. Once we began to sit my father began to tap on his wine glass with his knife, “I just would like to congratulate our two young daughters on qualifying for state and all that they've accomplished throughout the past ten years”. After Mrs. Wimingham seemed to give him an unusual stare. Well in the meantime across from me was this adorable baby nagging on Grandma Karen's oxygen cord. I always wonder if people today truly understand the pain she goes thru every day. Her pale skin with permanent lines lined around her nose, the loud sound of the tank clicking every two seconds, and the agony of knowing she won't be able to breath every day without lugging a box around. I eventually zoned out into my thoughts of yesterday again. My head launched an enormous pound, stress was definitely was the answer to this problem.
The night went by and I knew eventually this question would come along “So where are you going to college?” Said my Aunt Tammy. My voice started to tremble, “I'm not sure yet actually”. She replied once again, “Well sure you do with all those offers you have to like one of them”.  I rolled my eyes, “Well it's not from The University of Kentucky so it doesn't…” My mom quickly interrupted me, “So girls sense you did so well this weekend I say we go up to our lake house next weekend to celebrate”. I just sank in my cushioned chair and my eyes began to roll.
The night went on and soon enough it was time to go home. My legs began to tremble it was time to get some sleep, but all of sudden my phone began to beep. I quickly reached for my phone and all of a sudden my blurred eyes began to read ‘message from Daxton Wimingham’. Do you ever get that antsy feeling  when you get a notification from someone who you usually don't talk to? Well that was the feeling. I began to read the message aloud, “Hey”. My eyes once again sunk back into the back of my head. “Of course” I began to scream! Daxton has always tried to talk to me or whatever people call it. But with Bailey as my best friend I've always decided it was never a good decision. My fingers began to tap eight times, ‘What's up?’. My body soon became heavy and eventually dreams of only state appeared in my head.

Bright was to say the least. I quickly reached over to grab my phone and icons flashing of green and yellow covered the screen. My heart began to break knowing I was awake on a Sunday morning at seven o'clock. Five in red outside the green message bubble. I began to scroll one message from Mom (Victoria) “Be awake and ready to go for church at 10:30”. The next four messages came up under the name, Daxton. “Guess what”, “I think my mom is pregnant”,  “Hello?” , and “Really?”. All of a sudden I didn't seem to be as tired as before. I quickly responded, “ Are you serious! Does Baily know?”.  I eventually rolled out of the mountain of blankets and started to get ready for my day.
Once again Roxy our pug barks echoed throughout the house. I quickly ran down the staircase and slide into the dining room. All of a sudden I see locks of blonde hair run down the chair. I began to scream, “Jessica your home”. My sister never comes home on Sunday's she always seems something to do at college. She ran across the room and gave me a huge hug. Her sweet voice began to say, “I missed you so much I had to come home and congratulate the winner”. I began to chuckle “well I'm gonna go get ready for church and then we can catch up”.
My family going to church on Sunday almost felt more like a show then going to actually praise God. We sat in the third row in perfect unison and are forced by our parents to participate in the readings. Today their was an exception since Jessica was home my dad made her read. Few! All of a sudden the wooden pews began to give my back aches and the blue stain glass window glared in my eyes. At church half the time I get distracted by the little things. Today for example, there was this cute newborn in front of me, her tiny teeth and palms swaddled around a cute toy bear. Our Priest Father Mark gave me a dirty glare from the altar for not paying attention. But honestly I could care less he has been at this church forever it seems like. Finally the closing song began and it was at last time to leave.
My family of course had to take one car and it was of course my dad's luxury Mercedes. He rolled up in front of church to pick up his ladies and my mother began to say, “Grandma Karen has planned a special brunch this Sunday at her house”. My face began to smile of the thoughts of her warm cinnamon melts she makes. For most of the drive it seemed to be silent not including my dad's golf radio playing in the background. Grandma K lived in a cute town called Ranchero right outside of Dallas. The windy roads with all the leaves on the ground made me anxious for October. My phone finally broke the silence with a quick vibrate. I looked down and it was a message from Daxton saying, “yeah she knows, but what are you doing later tonight I need help with the chemistry homework plus Bailey is out of town tell Tuesday so she wouldn't find out that we are together”. I hate responding right away just because it looks like you're a little excited for someone to text you. But I ended up doing it anyways, “I just have to drop Jess at the airport then I'll come pick you up and we can go hang at my house”.
At last we arrived at her cute blue cottage house. Memories of visiting as a child came up, I loved the public playgrounds and tennis courts to go play on. Decorations for Halloween from left to right filled the house. All of a sudden my grandma’s sweet voice began to say, “ Welcome guys find your seat next to the place tag”. The beautiful China made the perfect touch to the long lining of cloth. I then noticed the cute name tag with my grandmothers gorgeous handwriting. My family at home never feels like a true family but when we are with Karen sparks seem to go off.
We all surrounded the table and said grace, at the end our family's tradition is to say a blessing for our grandpa George who passed away from pancreatic cancer 4 years ago. Then soon after my grandma began to say, “Grab your plate and dig in”. The aroma in the kitchen smelt better than anything ever before. Multiple dishes filled with hash browns, sausages, eggs, and of course her famous cinnamon melts. My plate soon after became heavy and I took a seat in a nice grey cushioned seat. Then all of a sudden my grandma pulled out photos from when she went to the olympics for ice skating and eventually her silver medal. She began to say, “ This is your inspiration for the next couple weeks training...dreams can come true keep up with your training and especially your school work”. I began to tear up, “Thank you so much that was so kind of you”. I quickly scarfed down the rest of my plate and soon enough it was time to get back in the car.
Finally we were back in Dallas in our gated neighborhood. I quickly got changed into this new outfit I ordered online, a new black leather jacket, ripped jeans, and booties. I gotta  say I did feel pretty slick. All of a sudden it was time to drop Jess at the airport and pick up Daxton. My heart began to pound faster as I opened my Range Rover’s door. Luckily for me the airport was close or else I think I might've had a heart attack. It was sad enough i barely got to spend time with my sister. Jessica soon began to shout, “Terminal A United”. I quickly slammed on my break and swerved into to right lane. I started to laugh, “whoops”. I pulled over and helped lug her luggage to the door gave her a quick kiss and bam she was gone.
Stares all around surrounded me. I get it I look pretty young to drive a Range Rover but still chill out people. My GPS eventually lead me to Daxton’s in ten minutes. It felt very weird to picking up Daxton and not Bailey, I was betraying the ultimate best friend rule. I started to type on my phone, “Here” then the swoosh sound loudly went off. All of a sudden the garage door began to open and all I see is his nice leather loafers. In my head all I could think is wow we'd be cute together. Soon enough he hopped into my car and chucked his backpack in the back. Daxton began to smile, “Hey you look nice today”. I couldn't help but pause for a second and stare at his perfectly gelled brown hair and his blue eyes staring into mine. My voice began to shake, “Awe that's so nice of you to say that…so what do you need help with?”. I wish I could have said something else but friend code is very important to me. His deep voice began to say, “Everything” I started to do that cute little fake laugh, “that might take a whi”. He quickly interrupted, “I've got time”.
Finally we arrived back home and Roxy was waiting at the door for me. To break the awkward silence I began to say, “I'm going to go grab my backpack upstairs I'll be right back”. All of a sudden I hear footsteps along the wood floors outside my room. “Are you kidding me…” I said quietly under my breathe. Eventually I see Daxton standing outside my door he proceeded to asking, “Are your parents home?”. I knew that this was going to break the best friend code forever...I began to shut the door.

Beep. Beep. Beep. The alarm clock began to go off. I rolled over and began to scream louder then ever, “Shoot”. It was Monday morning and we had school starting in two hours. All I could think was that it was a true blessing that my parents were out at the lake house for the week. I started to tap on Daxton's back, “Goodmorning” he started to chuckle. My congested voice started again, “I'm going to go get ready for school, I'll just take you to school I guess…”. His raspy morning voice said, “Alright cutie”.
I grabbed a quick bite to eat of my favorite granola bar, jumped into my car, and  hoped everything was ready for the day. Fifteen minutes later we pulled up to our high school, Cathedral. Glares from three-sixty surrounded my car pulling into my parking spot. I guess it was very hard for them to understand the concept that a junior can talk to a senior. Daxton ran across to open my door and proceeded to saying, “have a good day, thanks for the fun night last night”.
Each class couldn't have been any longer. Finally it was two o'clock, five minutes before school would be done. Mrs. Howard began to call me out, “Wake up Ms. Roberts”. I couldn't help but think of what happened last night. Stress was flowing through my veins. I started to think of multiple plans, plan A tell Bailey the truth of what happened, plan B say we were just working on chemistry, or lastly plan C we never hung out at all. I looked over all of the plans and they all seemed terrible. Finally the clock hit two-o-five, going to practice after school was really the last thing I wanted to do.
I raced out of school hoping to not catch eyes with Daxton but just my luck he texted me saying, “don't leave after school I wanna talk to you”. I sat in my car for ten minutes outside of school waiting for him to come out. Eventually I just ended up leaving due to the fact that  I had to drive all the way downtown to the Pettix center. I finally passed the traffic and ran inside. Martha my coach began to raise her voice saying, “You've got ten minutes to get ready! Bailey won't be here today she's touring colleges”. I sprinted into the locker room and changed in two minutes, i think it was a world record for me. Martha screamed again, “We’re in the ballet room today”.
If you didn't know already being flexible for ice skating is very important. Every bone in your body has to be stretched out to perfection or else injuries are very easy to achieve. Which I can relate to since I broke a part in my fibula last year right before state. I start out from my arms to toes and eventually get to put my skates on. Practice today was simple, stepping out on the ice puts me in a humongous bubble. Everything outside of the bubble just seems to go away. I went through my routine five or six times and at last Martha let me go.
My sore body stepped in my car and tears started running down my face. I began to say quietly, “I can't do it anymore… I need to tell Bailey as soon as she gets home”. All of a sudden the fray radio turned on the radio. My weary voice began to say, “what are the odds”. Driving always seems to always put me in my feels. But out of nowhere smells from Dominos filled my car. “Ohhh I know what I'm ordering for dinner when I get home” I said with an empty belly.
At last the doorbell rang and I quickly opened the door. It was the domino’s worker and I couldn't of been happier. I reached inside my pocket awkwardly for a crumpled up ten dollar bill and gave to this short girl who seemed very familiar. I couldn't help myself but I began to ask, “Hey you look very familiar...do I know you?”. All you could hear for a few split seconds was a breeze. The worker eventually responded, “Yeah I'm in your algebra class...I actually sit right next to you”. My throat felt a massive lump coming up, “Oh of course I knew that well thank you”. I quickly slammed the door and slid down the back of the glass door. “How could I have come this far in high school and not know the name of a classmate?” I said to myself.
The next week flew by, I noticed myself looking around more often than usual. With a school of four thousand I figured I at least would know half. I started out by counting in the hallways I'd look at people who had mathlete shirts on or even people who carried instruments on their back. I couldn't name one…I finally realized that my small tight nit group of people were all athletes.
At last I opened my phone and see Friday, two- o -five run across the top. All I could think was wow this week was long. It was time to meet my parents and the Wimingham's  at our lake house. I couldn't help but be nervous for a four hour road trip with Daxton and Bailey. My ansty foot decided to race home, I quickly packed a huge suitcase, and woosh I was off to pick up the Wimingham’s.

Today would be the second time sense seeing Daxton sense the incident. My heart was so in love, but my mind was telling me no. I pulled up to their long cobblestone driveway and I couldn't help but to replay Sunday in my mind. I finally put the car in park and anxiously texted the group chat, “here”. The same left garage door opened as last time, but this time it was just Bailey’s feet under. “Hey...long time no see” Bailey said in her cute swanky accent. I hopped outside my car and see three leather duffle bags full of clothes on the ground. “Bailey what were you thinking? We’re only gonna be gone for two days!” I proclaimed. She started to chuckle once again, “I know it's  better to overpack then underpack”. Bailey opened my front door and behind I see a shadow of Daxton to the right of me. “Hey Jules” his sweet voice said. I responded “Hey Dax why don't you help me get the rest of the bags in the trunk”. We eventually made this huge sculpture of luggage fit in the back. “Shoot I dropped my necklace” I went down to pick it up and all of a sudden we were both down behind the car. He tried to lean in and my initial reaction was to push him back. His face turned almost as red as the shirt he had on. Flustered would definitely describe what he was feeling.
I immediately opened the door and suddenly felt uneasy about the duration of the car ride. “I call the aux” shouted Bailey. Soon after Daxton said, “this is gonna be a long car ride”. Most of the ride Bailey and I just talked about homecoming, school, and of course state. Everyone looked so cozy especially Daxton in the back knocked along the side of the cold window. Soon enough it became dark and the long straight roads seemed to stretch out for miles.
At last my lights hit a small green sign that said welcome to Demoin, population four thousand. “Yes at last” I whispered to myself. I took a quick glance down at my phone the time suddenly went down from four hours to two minutes away. One last right blinker signal, into the long gravel road through the wilderness we'd go. My car started to shake uncontrollably waking up both Wimingham's. “Guys we’re here” I said all jittery.
When you pull up to our road you first see a large limestone sign that says, “Welcome to the Roberts Lake House”. This sign was extra special because our grandpa George carved it for us. After you pass the beautiful sign you finally get onto a nice smooth pathed driveway which reaches to the house...thank goodness. All of a sudden my headlights flashed a peek of the gorgeous blue lake. My favorite part is that we have three main complexes at our lake house a boat house, house, and a guest house. “Bailey can you please click the button for the garage? Thanks!” I said.
All of a sudden all five white doors opened and I see Roxy bolt out under the door. Next I see Daxton open the car door and see him to start chasing him down the hill. “Bailey I’m gonna go help Daxton. Can you pull the car in?” I said all frazzled. “Yes of course” she screamed as I was already halfway out the door. Roxys little legs ran all the way down to the deck. “You come back here Rox!!!!” I shouted across the yard. Daxton was already half way down the deck and all of a sudden I see a giant splash coming from the end. Next i see an even bigger splash coming from Daxton. “Oh what the hell…” I shouted mid air jumping in with full clothes. I took a glance over at Roxy and see a giant smile across his face. “Come here Julia I wanna show you something” Daxton said. “I can't see anything where are you? Swim over here” I said. All of a sudden out of the dark I see Daxton's face right in front of mine. “I want to let you know that I'm telling Bailey tonight about us… I know you have feelings for me she can't just stand in the way of us” Daxton said all nervously. I couldn't help but start to swim away screaming, “You just can't”. All of a sudden Daxton's muscular arm wrapped around my waist. “Julia wait I don't want this to ruin this weekend. I've always loved you since the first grade with your little blonde braids, then in fifth grade when you got your braces, and to now your beautiful smile. Please don't leave me Jules my intentions are clear you can take it or leave it”. I started to swim away faster than ever, and my arms became unbelievably sore. At last the hike up with the hill in my soggy jeans and Roxys wet fur rubbing up against me really made the start to the weekend fantastic.
All of a sudden I began to creak open the back door that leads into the kitchen, cheers came from left and right. “Hey you finally made it” my grandma said with excitement. Immediately after my mom began to yell “What happened to you?” as Daxton started to walk in the door. “Go put on a change of clothes missy I can see through your shirt you can explain to me what happened later”she screamed.
I started to walk to the stairs and I took a quick glance in the mirror to only see my white shirt soaked through. There seemed to be all of a sudden chuckling sounds behind me. “That's a good look for you Julia Ann” Daxton started to say in a snarky tone. I began to walk up the staircase without saying a word. “You can't ignore me you know I'll be here all weekend” he shouted from the foyer.
I quickly ran into my bedroom and began to ramble, “Why does this always happen to me? I'm just gonna tell Bailey that I like Daxton”. I turn around and suddenly  see a shadow coming from my bathroom around the corner. “Julia why didn't you tell me? I don't care you can just tell me next time we've been friends for so long why do you think I'd be mad at you?” Bailey said. “Oh my gosh you frightened me Bailey… I understand I just didn't want to hurt your feelings at all” I said with a tear coming from the corner of my eye. “You'd never hurt me for liking Daxton, you guys would actually make a cute couple” she came over to me and gave a gigantic hug. All of a sudden I felt clean, it almost felt like Bailey was the priest and I was giving her a confession.
Later that evening my mother called up to the room, “Bailey! Julia! You are going to sleep in the guest house tonight”. I quickly packed my bags and lugged them across the long driveway. This house was built right across the actual house on this humongous hill. It's almost creepy how much they both look like each other. Out of nowhere in the corner of my eye I see a small little shadow crawling along the side of the house. All I could hear was the ruffling sounds along the old crunchy leaves. Ahhh! I began to scream all the way into the house until the door was slammed tight. I dropped my heavy bags immediately along the wooden floors and looked up to only see Bailey chuckling over at the table, “It was the raccoon huh?”. I shrugged my shoulders and answered, “Probably...it scared the you know what out of me”. “I could tell” Bailey proclaimed.
Every time we're out at the lake we always love to shoot off fireworks even if it's thirty degrees out. I quickly shouted to Bailey, “Hurry up meet me out by the dock”. Soon after I ran up the hill to the boathouse to grab the giant set of fireworks. Out of breathe I creaked open the door to only see Mrs. Wimingham and my dad kissing behind my grandpa's old pontoon boat. Bam! The door was slammed immediately. I started to run down the driveway to see a shadow of Bailey walking towards me. “What's wrong?” She asked. I did my quirkiest smile responding with, “Oh we're all out of fireworks that's all...let’s go to bed now okay”.

I felt as if a brick wall had fallen on top of me. My heart was rushing faster than ever before. Laying down in my bed nothing but visions of my mom in tears. How could my dad do this to my mom? I said aloud. All of a sudden a visions of me skating appeared in my head. I was skating so fast that I couldn't tell if it was real or fake. Boom! Wiped out, chunks of ice flew into the air. Black is all I could see.
