The reasons women have such high standards of men is because of authors like Nicholas Sparks as well as others, who have raised the standards for women and have left unattainable standards for men. In dozens of books and movies, the man and women make eye contact and BAM! They’re in love. Makes since right? Unfortunately this doesn’t happen often or even at all. In my seventh grade year I saw this eighth grade guy and he impressed me. I thought he was the guy I was going to marry and that we were going to have a big house with a few kids and live a perfect life. There was only one minor problem we never talked. I went crazy obsessed with him and left him love notes.
In many songs are lyrics that play a girl’s heart, such as “I would catch a grenade for you” or the song, “What Makes you Beautiful” by One Direction. This obviously gets their ratings really high, but what it does for a woman is get their hopes up that some guy may think you’re the best thing ever, while guys don’t understand why girls are so obsessed with these kinds of songs. A study, led by Dr. Brian Primack, an assistant professor of medicine and pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, found that teens who reported listening to music more often — rather than using other types of media like TV and books — were at higher risk of having major depressive disorder (MDD), compared with teens who listened to music less frequently. A seven-year study published in 2009, also led by Primack, showed that teens who watched more TV were more likely to become depressed in adulthood, compared with teens who watched less.
Some kinds of music can actually help people deal with depression, while others increase depression and violence. Country music is one of the genres that doesn't promote happy feelings. In fact, country music has been linked to depression and suicide. Rap or hip hop music has varying effects on people. Young adults, both male and female, who listen to rap music are generally more accepting of violence towards women. Rap songs are more known to promote angry feelings than any other. The effects of rock and punk music are similar to those of rap. It can leave a listener feeling angrier than before, but at the same time gives them an adrenaline rush like no other kind of music. Classical music is one of the least popular music selections around, but it is one of the most empowering. Classical music has been found to increase creativity, reduce tension and enhance specific types of intelligence such as verbal ability and spatial-temporal reasoning. Listening to classical music can be an effective therapy to give yourself, as it will leave you feeling calm, content, and productive. Some specific songs have the ability to bring back dozens of memories, some that we would rather forget, including my 3 year crush I mentioned earlier.
Music is not the only media that has negative effect on teenagers; TV shows have been known to increase various emotions. TV shows are full of character stereotypes. The Palo Alto Medical Foundation says TV shows have unrealistic body types: men with muscular builds and women with extremely thin frames. This causes teens to become dissatisfied with their own bodies. KidsHealth explains that on TV shows, teens and adults are often portrayed doing drugs, smoking, drinking and having premarital sex. This encourages teens who watch, to participate in the same types of risky behavior.
The majority of people realize that what movies often portray is an unattainable picture of beauty whether it be a skinny actress or a muscular actor, but what few people notice is that Disney movies as well as other cartoons do the same thing. Rumble, Cash, and Nashville found that the association of attractiveness and thinness with goodness was present in over 100 female characters appearing in 23 Walt Disney animated films and cartoons produced over a 60-year period. In one show on Cartoon Network, Johnny Bravo, has a star that has muscular beefcake young man named Johnny Bravo who dons a pompadour hairstyle and an Elvis Presley-like voice and has a forward, woman-chasing personality.
Altogether TV shows, movies, and music has left a negative effect on teenagers. Continuing on the story of my crush, it hasn’t worked out quite how I had planned, but I’m okay with that. For now my favorite song is “Some of God’s Greatest Gifts are Unanswered Prayers” and one of my friends thoughts after she found out who the guy was said “He’s not that cute, he doesn’t seem really friendly, and he doesn’t really strike me as being smart. Why him?” And all I could do was smile, cause I don’t know why I liked him in the first place.
