Who am I?

The world is trying to make people something they're not. Identity is so important
because it defines a person; the way they talk, work, create, and decide is all based on
their identity. Whichever identity or essentially, facade, a person chooses to portray is
the determining point of they way they will live their life. Identity is something that a
person can choose, but it is also molded and fostered by their culture, media, and family
influences.
The world today is a scary place. It is constantly pushing and pulling people left and
right to strive for greatness but will be the first to tear someone down. The way of life we
live nowadays is all about fast-paced success. But what about the people who aren't cut
out for fast-paces? What happens to the people who are swallowed up by the constant,
"Go go go!" of this generation? They are lost. They are doomed for failure because they
have been too slow to keep up. An example of this would be in The Whale Rider. The
people of Papa New Guinea had to travel 1,000 years in a lifetime. In a lifetime. Their
culture was being swallowed up and they had no way to save it.
Media- television, Internet, radio. All of these things influence people in ways that
they might not even know. From the commercials played on television to the articles
read on the Internet, everyone is being asked to change. It could be that someone
needs a new hairstyle or a new car. The identity a person has is shaped by the things
around them such as a job, house, or hobbies. Identity is chosen because each person
can choose the things that are played or watched or listened to.
Family is a different matter. A person can't choose who they are related to (except a
spouse) or where they come from. Families influence the way a person thinks because
they grow up with them, spend quality time with them, and are a part of them. Family is
something to take pride in. In The Whale Rider, Kahu loved her Koro very much, but he
didn't feel the same way. She allowed him to influence her like no other. He was her
example in life. In the end, he loved her, too. And that's what family is, a bond that can't
be broken, no matter how hard one tries to break it.
In the end, only a person can choose who they want to be, but that doesn't mean they
aren't influenced by the things around them. Someone can choose the amount of time
spent with each of these things but the ideas are still around, penetrating the thoughts
and actions of people that have no idea.
