Critical Drug Shortages are Causing a Panic

The increase number of drug shortages in the United States is causing doctors to choose between patients in some cases. They say that we’re now at 213 shortages for this year and it just keeps increasing with each passing year. Drug shortages used to be really rare, but now they are becoming very common. Some shortages include medications such as cancer chemotherapy agents, anesthetics, antibiotics, electrolytes needed for nutrient solutions, and an important drug called labetol (used to control blood pressure). At least 15 people have died because of these drug shortages and 10 others got really sick after getting bacteria-contaminated intravenous feeding solutions made by local pharmacies.

These shortages are most likely occurring because something has gone wrong in the manufacturing process. Only 11 percent of these shortages are from companies deciding to not make the drugs anymore. Fewer companies are making theses essential drugs, though and the remaining factories can’t keep up with the demand resulting in a drug shortage. It is very dangerous for these drug shortages to occur because it’s causing some patients to have to wait on their medications or to substitute with other drugs which doing so can go as far as damaging your nervous system.
