Many things have helped to shape my life, but I think one of the most important things in my life is playing softball. Even when I was small, I have always loved the sport, but what really made me want to play, was having my older cousin that I looked up to, Samantha, play competitively. Whenever we saw each other we always were out in the yard having a catch. Also, we would go to each other’s games, and cheer each other on. Recently, Sam was sliding into second base, head- first, and dislocated her left shoulder. She then, was of course rushed to the hospital, and they took some X-rays. As it turned out, she not only dislocated her shoulder, she tore some ligaments and cartilage. She had 2 choices. To either undergo a surgery that might work, or go through months of physical therapy and medications. She chose the therapy, and even after a year and a half, still isn’t allowed to play softball.
This moment of truth has impacted my life because it has made me realize how one bad mistake could make a world of a difference. Also, it has made my career in softball a lot more cautious, and not risking the rest of my softball years, or any sport at that, just for a game. This also makes me motivated to do better in softball, so that maybe one day I will be just as good as Sam, maybe better. I think this experience has helped me a lot as an young adult because it showed me things, just happen, and there isn’t one thing you can do about it except keep moving forward.
