Dear Teacher . . .

Dear Teacher,

Why do I love to learn, but hate school?

Why does learning warm my heart, while school sends ice slicing through my veins?

Why do my ears perk up when I hear an interesting fact in the park, but I can’t keep my eyes open in a classroom?

Do I even matter to you, teacher?

Or am I just a name, just a random combination of letters, that will drizzle out of your mind once the year ends?

Do you realize that you determine my life?

Do you realize that my future lies within that pencil you hold?

Why do you assign hours upon hours of homework, teacher?

Why has homework not only taken over my home, but my family, my sleep, my life?

What is the points of tests, teacher?

What is the point of carefully coloring in a bubble with my #2 pencil?

Why do you care more about the brand of my pencil, teacher, than the material in my head?

Why does a single test make or break my grade, my life, my future?

Why does a grade letter determine my intelligence, not my work ethic?

Why does your A elate me, teacher, but your B crush my soul?

Why do my grades determine my status, teacher?

Why do my grades determine how people see me, teacher?

Why do my grades determine my future, teacher?

Why do my grades determine my life, teacher?

Teacher, why can’t you answer?
