A Portrait Of Extinction This work has been published in the Teen Ink monthly print magazine.

   There it is -

that great symbol

of wealth, of

prestige

and the elite,

on a thick

gold hanger

strong enough to withstand

its great weight.

The shades of brown

are extraordinary:

light as pine.

dark as mahogany.

Each strand of fur

looks like

it has been

individually soaked

in the finest polish

to create

and enhance

its superior shine.

The warmth and comfort

that a great fortune brought

must be

unbelievable.

I'm sure the creature

was once gifted with

this luxury, was

able to withstand

the coldest days

and nights of winter,

nestled in small dark cave,

like a baby cuddled next to his mother -

trying to share

the scarce heat.

Now he hangs on our expensive

gold hangers,

a portrait

of extinction.
