I love writing with a passion and it's something I can absolutely see myself doing in life. However, many adults that I talk to about having a career as a author/writer, tell me that it's too hard to obtain a job in the field, and that all their friends who went to school for writing now "regret" that decision. It's hard and kick-butt world, I realize that, but if this is my true method of self-expression, I don't believe I'll be as successful in any other field.
Help! These conversations are breaking my heart.

Stick with your dream! (I know, that was a little cheesey). But it's true. Yes, the world is tough. But the way the world is will change (possibly even for the better) by the time you get out into the working world.

Don't give up your dream! If you have the talent, you will make it. And now with the developing ebook world, you have more chance then ever.

Don't give up on writing.
But....(there is always a but, sorry)
I would suggest going into a career where you can incorporate writing into it while doing your personal writing on the side (the writing that will hopefully grow into that writing career you dream of). It's good to have a back up that you like almost as much as your first choice.

You can major in English Literaure somewhere where creative writing is an offered course. I know the NYU in Abu Dhabi has that, and I'm sure they have it in other places. Englsh Literature gives you a wider choice in careers and also lets you write.

Don't stop being a writer, but maybe choose a career, like others have said, that have to do with writing. And you can always write as a hobby and publish your stuff :D

Stick with your dream! <3
Have a back-up plan, maybe a career related to writing (e.g. journalism) but writing is an easy dream! If you work hard, you can always find the time to write. :)

If you love it, then you shouldn't give up on it, even if other tell you that it's hard to make a lot of money as a writer. The important thing is that you are happy with your job, unlike the other people who are famous and rich but they only do it for the money.

I know exactly how you feel, people tell me that to. WHat I'm planning on doing is trying to get a double major, one for creative writing and another for something that I know can support me if writing doesn't work for me.

you need to take any other career, but keep on with you writing. Living a life with only writing is tough, isn't it?

keep going with your writing!!!! if you love it as much as you say you do, then you should definitely follow your heart, dreams, and instincts. who cares what other people say? everybody is different. your experiences wont be anything like theirs. dont live your life by what everybody else says. make your own path. good luck :)

You MUST NOT give up your dream of becoming a writer!!! Every writer in history has been told that. True, you may need a day job at first, and write on the side 'til you get going. Maybe you'll always need that day job. Maybe you'll be poor. That's a chance you'll need to take if you're really serious about this.
The question is, do you care about yourself or your craft more? You'll need to answer this before you can truly decide. but don't let ANYONE influence your decision.
