Take baby steps, a simple Hi, when you see him for a week. Followed by a "whats up?" or "how are you?" the next week. By the third week if you feel bold enough to combine the two and start with small talk, then go for it. But a smile and a wave is also a good start as well.

Haha, I'm really shy too! Try acting "casual"--observe other girls, or act around guys like you do around girls (just be a friend). Try not to freak out over anything, and engage in conversation when applicable. Keyword is casual until you're friends, then I have no idea what to do after that.
