The ground below us begins to shake and Lee has to grab my arm so I don't fall over. "What was that?"

Lee glares at the ground, "Just the begining I am afraid."

"Brilliant," I mutter. "Could you be a bit more specific?" I close my eyes, though I don't know why. My hair begins to whip about in a heavy wind that scatters leaves and spreads them across the ground.

"Just relax," Lee says soothingly. "They can smell fear."
"They?!" I ask in a panic. Then, I hear a thick growl out of the murky forest.
"Run?" I ask, looking at Lee.
"Run," he confirms, and we both begin to sprint into the darkness.

Behind the forest seems to explode.  Dirt and brush go flying as three giant black widow spiders hurtle after us.
"What are those things?" I shreek. Dragons were one thing, spiders were another.
"Their pets," Lee says.  "And those are just kittens compared to the rest of their zoo."
"What can be worse that horse-sized spiders?!"

"Well, there are always dragon-sized spiders," Lee offered as we ran.
I nearly slapped him, but refrained from doing so at the last second, seeing as we were running for our lives. "And who's pets are they?!?" I shouted through teeth gritted in fear. The spiders scrambled after us, and every few seconds I would feel a thin leg brush my back, pushing me to run faster.

"It's too hard to explain right now!" he says. screaming over the wind. "Keep running! I know where to go! There's a safe house up ahead!" I nod and keep running.

The tree branches slap our faces because we are running so fast that we don't have time to push them aside.  The spiders screech at us and are only a few paces behind.
We come upon a large giant-brair patch. I start to slow down but Lee grabs my hand and drags me behind him, "No! Keep running!"
He tucks and rolls through a tiny opening and without any further thought I jump after him.

"Where have you been all these years?" ask as we run. "You seem different." I dart around a bush. He is silent for a while, and I don't pry. Finally, he sighs.
"I left the country after we quarreled. I didn't want to see anything that reminded me of you." It is good to know that he cares.
"But where did you go?"

"You know that world you went to on your first Test?"
I nod as the spiders reach the hole and try to grab us.  Lee begins to crawl, army style, further into the briar patch.
"What about it?" I ask.
"I went there," he grunts as he wriggles forward. "I learned some new tricks."
I stop crawling after him. Lee was always one to learn new magical spells or fighting tricks. He was a Master at both arts. "Like what?"
Lee glances over his shoulder at me and opens his mouth to reply, but the spiders give a large shreek as they push farther inside. "I'll tell you when we reach safety."
It isn't the answer I want, but I guess I'll just have to let it go....for now.

"Come on, " says Lee calmly. "We're almost there."
We begin running again. My lungs are burning, and my legs feel like jello. Then, Lee slows to a jog.
"It's coming up here somewhere," he says. "Here! Stop."
The forest is silent. He walks up to a gnarled tree. Then, his eyes begin to glow red like hot coals and a hole opens up.
"Come on," he says, smiling.

I am skeptical at first, because this is the man who stole my heart and ran with it, who tossed it into the lake when my rule became corrupt, instead of helping me. But I cannot blame him, because he knows me well enough to know that I don't accept that kind of help. A feeling of warmth bubbles up and spreads over me as I put my hand in his and step into the hole.

I'm not sure what I expected but this certainly isn't it.  We enter through the tree into a underground city.  Buildings taller than trees tower below and fires burn everywhere so there is plenty of light and thousands of people are below us walking on streets or riding these strange beasts.
"What is this place?" I gasp.
"Enora," Lee grins and pulls me toward a stair case where two guards stand in watch. They bow as we pass, though I do not think it is at me.

"Who are you here?" I stutter, shocked at its sudden appearance. "And how did the tree take us here? What have you been doing?"
"The spiders cannot follow us here." his voice is lost, almost delirious. He turns to me, a rich power in his voice. "This is my world, as the Myriod is yours."

"Is this where you went after you ditched me?" I ask.
Lee stops and looks at me. "I had nowhere else to go." he says and looks down.

"I'm sorry," I say on an impulse, which feels good to say for the first time in front of someone who I truly care about. But my curiosity overcomes me. "Why didn't you tell me about this place? And what is it?"

"This," he says with obvious pride, " Is Enora. We built it out of the ground. There are thousands of people here and they all have given me the title of King."

Guilt bubbles inside of me. I did not build the Myriod; I conquered it from a dictator. And then I became one.
"Enora has a just ruler," I say softly.

Lee stops walking and turns to look at me. He tenderly touches my cheek and says softly, "Myroid will have a just leader again. Just like she used to. You have changed. You see that you were wrong."

I pause. "There is evil there. A strong evil. Before I can rule again the evil must be conquered." My breaths began to shake. "I must turn around and face it. I won't drag you into my battles again, Lee. I'm sorry."
I look behind me, where the thin outline of the gnarled, leafless tree is waiting for me to go through it.
