The kid stares at me.
"What is going on?" he says. Then, he shudders and drops to his knees. He looks up at me, pupils dialated. His eyes have changed to a familiar shade of green.
"You left me," he says. "I never forgave you..."

I know that voice. "You know I had to! I had no choice!"
The kid snarls, "You always have a choice.  You chose your kingdom over me.  Even after everything we had been through, after all that time when it was only me and you and no one else." The kid starts to shutter.
"What are you doing to him?" I scream, "LEt him go!"

"He doesn't deserve this! He deserves better! Do not hurt him when you are mad at me! Torture me; kill me, I do not care, but you cannot harm an innocent child!" I scream into the smokey air. I collapse to my knees. "Please!" I shout. I scream so loud that I cough my own blood onto the dead grass crisp with frost. "No!" But around me there is only silence. A thick, suffocating silence.

I look up and look around in shock.  The child is gone.
"You have passed you first test.  Your willingness to sacrifice yourself for an innocent proves you want to change."
I sag onto the ground. I felt sick. "That child...was he even real?"
"Does it matter?" the voice askes.
"Yes, I need to know if he was hurt."
The voice is silent for a moment before it speaks in a softer voice, "The child is in no harm nor ever was."
I sigh in relief.
"Now it is time for your next trial. Are you ready?"

"No," I whimper, but I know that fear will do me away for good. "Yes!" I call to the voice. And my surroundings disappear once more.
This time I am in a cave that I recognize only too well. It is where I used to meet my eyes and ears to hear their reports. Aliea is there, my chief reporter. She paces the entrance, and I can only assume that she is waiting for me.

Then, her eyes turn red and she pulls her poison-tipped sword from her belt.
"I will kill you..." she hisses. Her face slowly morphs into that of a snake.

"Ailea, snap out of it," I take a step back,  but draw my sword.
She lunges at me and screams and I get a clear view of fangs.  I block her and dance away. "What is wrong with you?"

"Your henchmen are turning. To face the evil that is stalking your land, you must first face yourself. That is why you are here." The voice nearly growls at me by now. I know what I must do. Loyal servant she may be, she is a danger to my life and my morality. I raised my sword for the kill.

As soon as my blade touches her, she disintegrates into millions of grains of sand. The raging wind quickly blows them away.
"Congratulations," says the voice. "You have passed the second test. You have shown bravery and courage in the face of evil, no matter who it is."

"Are you prepared for your third?"
This time, a confident "Yes. I am," claws its way through my lips, even though I do not feel ready. But it is too late. My surroundings are already beginning to swirl.

I am now in the middle of a market place.  Everywhere I look people are rushing around and shouting bargins.  It is utterly chaotic compared to the cave and woods that I've just recently been to.
I quickly scan my surroundings. What is my purpose here?

A bag of gold coins materialized in my hand. Your kingdom, the voice hinted. I watched as a man in a silver suit of armor broke up a tustle that had started in the square. On a sudden impulse, I walk toward him.
"Yes?" he questions when he sees me coming.
"I need you to come back with me," I reply. I hold up the bag of coins. "Someone to protect my kingdom. To obstruct my enemies," I said, thinking of the sign inscribed in the post on that playground. The man nodded, and once again my surroundings blurred.
You have passed the third test. To look after your kingdom before yourself.

Suddenly I am back at the pond.
"I'm surprised," the voice says.
I whirl around and find myself face to face with him. His green eyes bore into me and he has a hand casually resting on his sword, the same swod he used to protect me from the dragon with.
"You were the voice?" I stare at him, "Why...why did you...?"
He chuckles and steps toward me.

"Alena, you didn't forget already, did you?" he says. "Remember last winter? That amazing quest we had...that amazing kiss we had..." he locks his sharp green eyes on me.
"What happened to all that?"

I look down and away from him, "It was you. You called me a monster."

"You were a monster. But you're not now. You're finished with that business, but we're not. There is danger ahead, Alena. Grave danger."

My heart pounds, "Danger? What kind of danger, Lee?"

He shook his head solemnly. "I do not know. I only know that you must fight. You are your country's only hope, and I will be by your side for eternity."
"Thank you," I murmured. "But before there is the fight there must be the spark of conflict, and you know I don't like it when conflict sparks."
"You have faced yourself in those tests. Nothing is more difficult than that, even if it holds more peril."
