Let's say that I've already submitted a piece to your website, and I'm entering a writing contest that gets nationally graded. Would I be allowed to use the same story that I posted on this site in the contest, or does copyright prevent that?

As long as the contest you're submitting to doesn't require exclusive rights of your piece, you're fine :)
