Emma let out a breath and started to shuffle home as quickly as she dared. She hugged her bag close, trying to hurry up and get to her place and put herself together before he came.
She went up the stairs, not even stopping when her knees threatened to buckle.
SHe fumbled with her key and got herself in the door, panting for breath. She tossed her bag onto the couch and rushed to her room, almost falling over.
Hayden went home and got his car, making sure to grab his bag with his wallet, script, etc in it before getting in the car and making his way to where Emma said to pick her up. He waited outside, listening to the radio while Rin sang along to one of the songs she knew.
Emma looked in the mirror, biting her lip. She tried asking herself why she was going through so much effort for Hayden off all people, but that inner voice was silenced by her worries that maybe he had noticed something different about her.
She made sure that her baggy black shirt hid her completely. She pulled on a pair of baggy jeans and even put a little concealer on uner her eyes.
She brushed out her hair and smiled at the mirror, trying to ppear perky.
When it finally looked as good as it was going to get, she put her flip flops back on, scooping up her bag and locking up before heading to meet him.
Hayden leaned back in his seat, tapping his thumbs against the steering wheel with the beat of the song. Rin had fallen quiet as she sat in the back, staring blankly out the window and kicking her feet against his seat.
Emma came down the stairs carefully, steadying herself with a few deep breaths and pulling on her cheerful self before looking through the parking lot.
She gave a little wave when she saw him, starting to walk quickly towards the car.
Hayden sat up in his seat and turned down the music before getting out and walking around to the passenger side. He opened the door for her and waited. "You look nice." He told her when she got close enough.
"Thanks." Emma said cheerfully, her bag slung over her shoulder. She blinked, a little surprised when he opened the door for him.
She gave him a quick, curt nod as she slipped into the car and sat down with a shaky breath.
Hayden noticed the slightly surprised look on her face and laughed a bit as he shut the door and went around to his side. He got in and started driving to the ice cream place.
Emma silently picked at the stiching on her colorful bag, not wanting to look at him, or out the window. She picked at her bag, pretending to be fascinated by the yellow thread between her finger and thumb.
Hayden glanced over at her, "Emma... are you okay?" He asked the same question he had asked not twenty four hours ago. He hit a red light and come to a stop, turning his attention to her for a moment.
Emma jolted a little, not expecting him to ask. She pulled on her customary smile, making herself look over to him.
"Of course I'm okay. What makes you think I'm not?"
There was a very tiny edge of nervousness in her voice.
Hayden frowned, not believing her. "Just... nevermind." He said, not wanting to push her into telling him anything if she didn't want to. The light turned green and he hit the gas again.
Emma awkwardly went back to picking at her bag. After a few seconds, she felt like she was suffocating in the silence.
"It's alright." Hayden answered. "And how about you?" He asked as he pulled into the parking lot of the ice cream shop.
Rin saw the bright ice cream signs and smiled, "Yay, ice cream!! I want strawberry!!" She giggled, bouncing up and down in her seat.
"It's really great. Things are great." Emma was perky and cheerful. Almost her old self. She glanced back at Rin and smiled wider towards the little girl.
Hayden nodded and shut off the car and got out, her went over to Emmas side and opened the door for her before getting Rin out of her car seat and setting her down. He grabbed his bag, took Rin's hand and waited for Emma, the only response to her answer being the small nod.
Emma quietly climbed out of the car, reaching into her bag to make sure her wallet was with her. Sure, he had said it was on him, but...
She wasn't going to let him pay. She was perfectly capable of paying.
Hayden waited until Emma was out of the car before he went to the door, he released Rin's hand and bowed, "Ladies first." He said before holding the door open.
Rin danced into the ice cream shop and ran over to the counter, looking in the glass at all the different colours of ice cream they had.
Emma blinked at him as she went in. He was so...unexpectedly gentleman-like. She quietly stepped inside, carefully watching him.
Hayden smirked as he walked in after her, going over to the counter and checking out the ice cream selection.
Rin looked over the ice cream and then tugged on Haydens shirt, "Will you read them to me?" She asked, wanting to know what they all were.
Hayden laughed and started reading off the names, when he got to Bubblegum, Rin tugged on his shirt again. "I want that one!"
