Emma heard crying and her head to look. She saw a little girl, blonde and bright eyed. Currently, she was crying, her knees scraped up.
Emma grabbed her patchwork bag and moved over to the little girl.
"Hey, shh. Shh," she crooned softly to the child as she rooted through her bag. She finally managed to pull out the tiny first aid kit she always carried and half a bag of Jolly Ranchers.
Rin looked up and sniffled, wiping away some the of tears with the back of her hand. "Hello." She said, her lip quivering as she tried to stop crying. She glanced at the things the girl was pulling out of her purse, looking at the first aid kit quentioningly.
"You want a Jolly Rancher? I can clean up your scrapes while you suck on one. Does that sound good? What flavor do you like?" Emma asked, soothing the little girl as she started to open her tiny kit. She glanced up to see if the girl's parents were around.
Rin blinked and looked down at the Jolly Ranchers. "Can I have a red one?" She asked, sounding as if she had said 'Wed' as she was still unable to pronounce R's.
"Rin! Where are you?" Hayden called to her, having lost sight of her. He came to the park and saw the blue and white of Rin's dress.
"Aw, of course sweetie." Emma reached into the bag, fingers seeking out a red one. She started to lead the little girl over to the oark bench she had been sitting on before. "So did you come here alone?"
Rin took the candy from her and popped it in her mouth, she shook her head and looked around the park. "My brother is here." She told the girl.
Hayden rushed over to them, "Rin! Don't do that. You scared the heck out of me." He scolded her.
"Bro-" Emma stopped short when she saw Hayden. She sat there, frozen slightly as he spoke to the little girl. God, how many times was she going to run into him within a twenty four hour period?!
She sat there with her little first aid kit in he hand. She opened her mouth to speak, then changed her mind and snapped her mouth shut, gathering herself, pulling on the perky persona and trying to look less tired.
Rin looked up at Hayden and nodded quickly, "Okay." She said, giggling as he ruffled her hair.
Hayden smiled genuinley at Rin and kneeled down infront of her, "You want to go get some ice cream?" He asked, reaching and ticking her side.
Rin laughed louder, "Yeah!" She yelled and pushed his hands away before looking over at Emma. "Do you want to come too?!" She asked.
Hayden looked over and noticed Emma for the first time since he got there. He had been so worried about Rin that he hadn't noticed the girl who sat beside her, the small first aid kit that she clutched in her hand and the forced smile on her face.
"This is your little sister?" Emma asked, looking at Hayden, trying to pull herself together. She was really a bit of a mess, with her dark sweats and baggy t-shirt. She had just slipped on a pair of flip flops before leaving the apartment, and her hair was just pulled back in a messy ponytail. Little flyaway whisps and half brushed pieces flopped out.
"Nope, never met the kid before today." Hayden smirked. "Right, Rin?" He pinched her cheek.
Rin hit his hand and frowned, "It's not nice to lie!"
Hayden laughed, "You're right. I'm sorry." He told and looked down at the ground, he covered his face and pretended to cry. "Please forgive me."
Rin wrapped her arms around one of his, hugging him. "It's okay! Don't be sad!"
Hayden faked wiping away a tear and glanced up at her, "Okay..." He pulled her into a hug and smiled. "Yes, she is my cute and sometimes annoying, little sister." He answered Emmas question again.
Emma let out a little huff and closed her eyes. She silently cursed her luck and prayed to whatever gods there were that she would try to be a better person if they could just please remove Hayden from her life.
Especially at this moment, when she felt and looked like a vulnerable, helpless mess when she was supposed to be strong and cheerful as always.
Rin poked Haydens shoulder, "Ice. Cream."
Hayden stood up and held out his hand for her, "Okay, lets go then."
Rin hopped off the bench and took his hand, she looked at Emma and tilted her head a bit, "So do you want to come?" She smiled.
Emma blinked, glancing at Rin and Hayden. She reached for her script.
"Oh...um...I should really work on lines," she said, fluster and nervous, trying to make a polite excuse as she smiled. "Thank you for offering though. You're so sweet."
Rin frowned and nodded.
Hayden looked down at his sister and then looked to Emma. "Are you sure? I'm buying. I can even work on lines with you if want..." He didn't know why he was offering... maybe it was the look his sister got when she had said no and maybe it was his way of trying to make it up to her after he made her cry... either way it felt right.
Emma bit her lip. She lowered her head as she thought about it. She couldn't believe she was considering it. A few months ago, she would've been able to say no. She would've said no and walked away.
But...now, she didn't have the emotional strength to refuse and walk away.
She let out a puff of air and closed her eyes.
"Fine. Just...Let me go back to my place for a few minutes. I'm a mess."
Rin jumped up and down, "Yay!"
Hayden smiled and nodded, "Alright... would you like us to meet you back here? I have to go get my car so..."
"Sure." Emma sighed weakly. She reached for her bag, stuffing her script into it. She tugged at her shirt, making sure she was hidden.
She seemed fragile, a little paler than before.
"Or I could pick you up from your place... though I don't really see why you can't just go like that. You look fine." Hayden said, scratching at the back of his head with his free hand.
Emma snorted. She hugged herself, reaching to smooth a hand over her messy pony tail. "I do not look fine. I don't even feel fine. I'll just...You can just pick me up. I live nearby at the apartment complex."
She sighed and ran a hand over her face, wishing she didn't look so tired.
"Okay, if you say so." Hayden muttered. "See you soon." He gave Rins hand a small tug so she would follow him out of the park. He glanced back at Emma quickly before continuing on. She looked different... exhausted and pale... he was starting to wonder if everything was okay...
