"I haven't had a good night in months." Emma said, a little bitterly. She quickly wiped her eyes, tipping her head up and taking deep breaths to keep herself from crying any more.
She seemed so frail lately, but only if you looked closely.
Hayden reached his car and got in, sitting there for a few minutes before starting it up and heading home. Mniutes later he pulled into his driveway and went inside, taking his bag with him. He ignored his parents, who ignored him back anyways and went upstairs to his room, making it halfway down the hall before someone grabbed onto his arm and yanked him to a stop. He looked down at his little four year old sister and gave her a smile before picking her up and continuing to his room. He left the door open and set her down on the bed.
Emma finally got herself to drive away, slowly and quietly.
She pulled into her apartment building, taking her bag and pulling out her keys. She walked up the stairs slowly, grimacing.
She had to pause several times.
Hayden set his bag down on his desk and then went to sit next to his little sister on the bed, sighing.
"How are you today, Rin?" He asked, smiling and his sister sat up and looked down at his face.
"Good!" She smiled brightly and giggled. "Mommy bought me a new dress!" She squealed happily, making Hayden laugh. What his sister loved more than anything was dress up. She pranced around the house and outside in the dirt in dresses of various colours and styles.
"Is it pretty?"
Finally, Emma got up to the little apartment she shared with her dad. She unlocked the door and stepped inside of the deserted apartment.
She sighed and tossed her keys and her bag onto the kitchen table before flopping onto the couch.
Her dad was gone, leaving a note in his place.
Working late tonight, don't wait up. Love you
Pretty soon Rin got bored and went downstairs. Hayden closed his door and went into his bathroom to have a quick shower. After he got dressed he went back into his room and layed down on his bed, pulling out his Ipod he plugged it into the speakers and started singing along with an acoustic version of Titanium by David Guetta.
Emma curled up on the couch, eyes shut tight. God, she was so tired. She just laid on the couch for a while. In her bag, her phone rang and chirped, but she ignored it and closed her eyes.
She reached sluggishly for the remote and turned on the tv, just to have some white noise.
Hayden went through some songs, listening and singing along quietly before he shut off the light and lowered the volume of the music so that he could still hear it but it wasnt overbearingly loud. His eyes fell shut and soon he fell asleep.
Emma was exhausted, more worn out than she should've been. Emotionally and physically. Yet she couldn't sleep. She laid there, on the couch, listening to the tv drone on.
It was some show about nature. Or was it a cooking show? She couldn't pull together enough focus to find out and she didn't want to bother.
She laid there, yet was unable to sleep for a long, long time.
Hayden slept right through the rest of the afternoon, right through dinner and everything. He dreamed about the play, the other auditions... Emma. He had made her cry and that bothered him. He wasn't nice to Emma but he still never thought he could make her cry.
Emma woke up after a night of restless sleep and just...laid there. She didn't move from the couch, just laying there. Sore and tired and feeling ill.
After a few hours, she forced herself to get up and grab her phone.
She scrolled through text message after text message, dozens of missed calls from friends.
She sighed and sat down to read and listen to the messages, but not to respond.
Hayden woke up to his little sister jumping on his bed yelling, "Get up, get up get up!"
He groaned and pulled a pillow over his face, trying to muffle out the sound of her voice. "Rin, go away..." He muttered.
Emma made her self go and shower, sluggish and tired. She hoped maybe showering and changing into fresh clothes would make her feel a little better.
Instead, she threw up in the shower and couldn't find a towel when she got out.
It was quite a miserable start.
Rin left soon enough but Hayden couldn't get back to sleep. He sighed and pushed himself up, running a hand over his face and turning his music up a little louder before getting changed into a fresh pair of jeans and a dark green long sleeve shirt. He went downstairs and had breakfast then went out for a cigarette before going to brush his teeth.
Emma pulled on a baggy shirt, looking in the mirror to make sure it hid everything. Along with it, she tugged on a pair of very dark gray sweatpants.
She grabbed her script and started to walk tiredly to the park to read.
Rin burst into Haydens room wearing a little blue and white checkered dress, much resembling the one dorothy wore in the Wizard of Oz. He put his toothbrush away and smiled.
"Take me for a walk!" Rin demanded, hands on hips. For a four year old she was sassy and demanding. Hayden laughed and nodded.
"Alright. Let's go then." He picked her up and ran downstairs as she laughed and shreiked for him to let her down. He slipped on his shoes and helped Rin with her shoes before taking her hand and leaving the house.
Emma slowly sat down at a park bench. She had come with her script to review lines, but found when she got there that she felt too tired to concentrate. So she just sat there with her knees pulled in to her chest.
Rin ran ahead and Hayden had to jog to keep close behind her. She laughed and screamed, "Catch me if you can!"
"Rin, slow down!" He called to her.
Emma glanced up a little, then lowered her head again, closing her eyes. She hugged her knees tighter to herself, sighing quietly.
Tomorrow was Monday. School. She would have to make herself bounce through another whole week of school.
Rin turned the corner and saw a park. She ran into the park and tripped, landing hard on the ground, scrapping her knees and elbow. She pushed herself into a sitting position and tears poured down her cheeks, little pieces of her light blonde hair sticking to her face.
