((Night. :) ))
He blinked and took the backpack, quickly wiping his eyes. As she led him across the fields, he tugged down his sleeves to make sure they were in place, hiding his arms as they ran along.
He felt sick to his stomach at the thought of going to school. So much that he almost said something. He almost opened his mouth to make the quiet excuse that he was sick or something, just to get out of it.
But he kept his mouth shut. It would probably just anger her more, and show just how stupid and useless he really was.
Just how stupid and useless as he had always been told he was.
He could still remember the nights when he hadn't done a good enough job cleaning up and staying out of the way, the ways he would be hurt.
He shuddered and slowed, having to take a few calming breaths at the memories, feeling the bile raise in his throat, the fear at the back of his mind.
Max looked back, it looked like South was going to be sick. She was rather worried knowing it was probably her fault but she didn't look worried or say anything. She just walked backwards, keeping an eye on him and makings ure he was keeping up.
((BY the way do you have any idea what event would bring them closer?))
South took a few more deep breaths and glanced up at her. He hugged the backpack in his arms, but not before tugging his sleeves down even more. Hiding the scars.
That's what he seemed to be good at. Hiding, doing as told and going unnoticed.
Even with neon blue hair, no matter where he went, he faded away, blending in as just one more moody kid.
((Hm....I've been trying to come up with ideas.))
When South looked less sick Max turned around again and kept walking. They got to the school at 8:00. Max went down to the priciple's office to report why they were late and introduce South.
"Mr. West thi sis Owen South, he goes by South he's a sophpmore." Max muttered,
"We're late because we were working and didn't get done until 7." she added. The principle gave Max a detention slip but allowed South to slid by since it was his first day. SOuth was given his schedule and Max headed off to class, it wa sa very small highschool, all sophomores were in the same class so she'd have to be South the whole day, and to make matters worse they'd skipped the first cclass becuase theyw ere an hour late, the first class ahd been math, Max's worst subject.
((Me too, I'll keep thinking...so far I have soeone from Max's past who she for some secret reason whosw up and something happens...but I don't have any specifics on that idea...))
South was jumpy and extremely nervous. He tried more than ever to fade away now.
At his old school, back when he was still being hurt, the endless bullying just made a bad situation worse.
He wanted to melt away, to hide, to get away from all these people. Even though it was a small school, to him, it seemed overwhelmingly huge.
It was very obvious they were late when Max enetred the class room, it was after all a single classroom for all the subjects except science, when they went to the lab. The teachers just switched out.
Max sat down and pulled out her books, SOuth had a fresh set of book her mother ha daquired from the school a week ago in his bag. Right now was ENglish class. Max had no friends so she normally sat near the back, especiallya fter Mase died she becmae antisocial and rebuffed anyway attempts to comfort her, or just express how sad they were at her brother's passing or make friends.
South sat in the farthest desk he could, focused intently on the desk, not lifting his gaze.
((Sorry, have to go for a bit))
South sat in the very back, the farthest he could get from anyone. He sat there and stared at the desk. He just wanted this day to be over. He wanted to be alone, without people around him all the time. He wanted to fade away and not be noticed. He just wanted to get by.
He didn't have any thoughts beyond getting by.
It was an old way of thinking. One that served him well in his old life, in his old...home, if it could be called that.
He wasn't seeking to be happy, he wasn't trying to have a better life.
He was just trying to get by as best as he could without being hurt too much.
Max slumped over her school books, reading the the chapters she was suppposed . She made notes on her notebook in he rlap. Theyw ere suppsed to silent read The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom. Max, who's family on her Mother's side were of of Jewish hertiage was actually quit interested in the WWII era. Her father was of mixed European and Slavic hertiage, mosty German, and Polish, and Russian.
South quietly started to read. He liked books. Books were a way to escape for him, a way to let the real world, full of pain and judgement , melt away and leave him in the story world.
It was really the only thing he did that made him happy at all.
Max was a very slow reader, she barely was able to finish the two chaprters and notes when silent reading time was up,
"Now you will split off into partners and for the next 4 weeks, until the end of the smester you will study The HIding Place at the end of the four weeks you will work together to make a book report, an essay, and summary of the book. In the ssay you will summaraize the events and history surrounding the books, discuss the various ways the events in the books effected the characters, you will discuss why the events happened, and you will dsicuss how youw ould react to thos eevents if they happened today. Remember work togethe ron this, it should be just oen persons work." teh etacher siad.
"Pick your partenrs." he finished. Everyoen satrte dto pick partenrs while Max sat in teh bak of the room, she had no friends to pick so she justw ould be stuck with whoever was left.
South froze. He had been breezing through the book when silent reading ended. Now he sat there in a panic.
Partners? He didn't want to work with a partner. He just wanted to be alone.
His hands went white as he gripped the book. He could do this assignment alone, he was sure of it.
Everyone was partners except South adn Max,
"Max, Owen, you are parterns now." the teacher said. "That's good ebcuase you live with each other, it will make things easier.
"For all you, the school ibrary will be open between 6 AM and 11 PM everyday except Sunday for you and the internet is free." the teacher said. He glanced at the clock,
"OK, PT is your next class." he siad and he left. The students talk amoung each other as they got up and went down to the locker rooms to change. South had been given Mase's old PT uniform so he they didn't haev tp ay for a new one.
Max was furious at being partnered with South, she'd rather do the whoel assingment on her own! She got up angrily adn trudged down to the locker rooms to change.
South flinched when he was partenered up with Max. He flinched again when it was time to go to the locker rooms and change.
He sat completely still, not moving from the desk, even when the others got up to go change. He stayed still, He was going to wait until everyone had changed and the locker room was empty.
Not wanting them to see all his scars.
Max chanegd quickly adn went out to the football/soccer field and track. They were a poor school and had only two sports feidls taht weren't very well kept. They had a baseball field and a soccer/football field.
((DO you want to go through tehw hole schoold ay?))
((Not particularly. If something interesting happens, like bullies or something.))
Finally, South went and changed, quickly. But as soon as he changed, he looked down at himself, how many scars were exposed.
He pulled the plaid shirt back on quickly, hiding in it as he headed out.
((Hmm, well maybe go through PT cuase that's wher eth bullying is more likely to happen and then skip to evening chores and workig in the assingment?
By the way for the event that pushes them together what if some dude from Max's past comes into the story and lets say something really abd happened to Max becuase of thsi dude and maybe it turns out that said dude also knows South?
Like maybe an uncle of Max's fostered South somewhere along the line and thisngw ent badly? Or something like that?))
