Ben didn't look in the bag, instead he put his head in his hands and groaned. After a couple seconds he pick his head up and looked at her, tears welling in his eyes. "You're doing so much for me, feeding me, bandageing me, you even got me clothes for goodness sake! How could I ever repay you... I have no money, nothing to offer." Ben put his head back in his hands, ellbows resting on his knees.
Hali opened her mouth to speak before closing it again and going to sit next to him. "There's no need to repay me... honestly, I've been kind of lonely here, I don't mind." She told him, picking at a stray thread on her shorts. "There's no one around here for miles and I... try to avoid town as much as possible so it's just me and the animals here." She mumbled.
Ben didn't move for awhile. Eventually he looked at Hali, "There has to be something I can do... I just feel guiltly takeing and giveing nothing." And endagering you without your knowledge. He added in his head but didn't say that out loud.
Hali frowned slightly, "There's nothing to feel guilty for. Everything I am doing, I am doing because I want to... I don't want anything in return except for you to get better, so don't worry about anything else." Ben seemed so bent on finding a way to repay her but she just couldn't think of anything he would be able to do in the state he was in. Maybe once he was all healed up... but surely he would want to leave by then.
Ben put his head back in his hands and sighed. He would have to leave soon, and who knows if he could even find his way back here. Getting better would be hard, a long process not to mention that he wouldn't wait long enough to heal. Hali was kind, and that just made his guilt worse.
((Hey could someone call that was looking for Ben? Would that be okay? They wouldn't have his acutal name.))
((Sure thing! No need to ask about plot twists with me, I just go with the flow on things lol))
Hali pushed herself up, "I have to go and check on the animals quickly... Would you like to come? I could help you outside if you would like?"
Ben thought about it for a second. "How about I'll come to the pouch, I don't want to stress the stiches too much." He stood up and put an arm over her shoulders to steady himself. The phone began to ring and he looked at her, expecting her to get it.
Hali nodded and supported his weight, she led him into the kitchen and picked up the phone there. It was odd for her to get a phone call, no one ever called her so you could hear the slight confusion in her voice when she answered.
Ben didn't think much of it, who cares if she gets a phone call? The voice on the phone said, “Hello Miss. Delano. I am part of a secret group who tracks down criminals and we have reason to believe that you are housing one without knowing it. Would you happen to have recently housed a person with many injuries and goes by a simple name like Alex or Matt?” Ben stiffened hearing the voice and quickly put his hand under her chin forcing Hali to look up and meet his eyes. Silently he shook his head and mouthed the word no.
Hali listening to the voice on the line, she raised an eyebrow as she listened to their questions and nodded slowly as Ben told her to say no. "No, I haven't. I'm sorry." She lied easily. Criminal? Secret group? Yeah right. How did they get my number anyways?
Ben let out a breath but didn't relax. The voice said, "Hmm, well. Mam' this is of the utmost importance, if you are housing anyone, please call us imetiatly." The call hung up and Ben sagged into Hali, closing his eyes in relif. Without opening his eyes he said, "Hali... thank you."
Hali rolled her eyes, "You won't like what I have to call you..." She muttered after the phone call disconnected. "Like he.ll was I going to let some shady 'secret group' come to my house. You're safe here, Ben. I didn't bandage you up just to throw you back to the wolves." She said jokingly. She set the phone down and looked up at Ben, "Still want to come outside?"
Ben looked at her in astonishment, she wasn't asking any questions, looking at him any differently. "I- uh sure." She had thicker skin than Ben had first presumed. Still, no matter how tough you are, you can't surrvive a bullet to the chest. Ben limped outside with her, wrapped in his thoughts, he had to get out of here and take suspession off her.
Hali caught the look he was given her, a smile tugged at the corner of her mouth. She stepped outside onto the pourch and helped him into a chair, pulling her braids over her shoulders and straightening her shirt. "I shouldn't be to long, if you need anything just hollar and I'll hear you." Hali turned on her heels and hurried down the steps and towards the barn to check on the animals.
Ben nodded and watched her go. His brow furrowed as he thought about everything. Ben was finding he acctually liked it here, and that would make it harder to leave.
Hali checked on the animals quickly, feeding them if needed. She went to the horses last and gave them all a quick brush before letting them out to run and get some excersize, seeming as she wouldn't ride them anymore she had to do this every once in a while. She left the barn and headed back to the house.
Ben saw the horses run out into the feild and he smiled. He could see Hali coming back and Ben sat down on a step to the porch waiting for her. It was nice here, quiet and secleded. Ben watched her, she was accutally rather pretty.
Hali glanced back towards the horses before looking at the ground and continuing to the house. She reached the steps and sat down next to Ben, looking over the property she could see. The barn, the stable, the front yard etc. There was a vast expense of green fields behind all this, lined by a forest that had many paths through it now.
Ben watched her until she sat down, then gazed out over the feilds. With a small smile he found he liked it, it was different than anything he had seen before. He turned to her, his smile growing wider, "So what do you do here all day? Simply sit and watch the animals? That seems actually very entertaining to me."
Hali looked over at him and smiled back, pretending as if her breath hadnt caught in her throat at the sight of that smile of his. "Most of the time. I take care of them, some of them get sold. I used to ride the horses a lot. I also used to go out to dances and stuff in town... used to attend all the town events. Now I prefer staying here as much as I can."
