Hali nodded, "That would be helpful, thank you." She passed the piglet to Ben and waved to the woman out the window as she drove back down the driveway and headed home.
Ben held the piglet against his chest and smiled content as they drove home. They drove on mostly back roads, very few cars were out and about. Ben looked out the window as the road intersected with another. Ben leaned foword and said very quietly, but urgently, "Stop!"
Hali looked over at him and hit the break a little harder than intended, the car jerked forward a bit before coming to a stop. "Sorry..." she mumbled and looked in the rear view mirror to see if there had been anyone behind her that could have hit her.
Ben reached over and undid her seatbelt. "Get down so someone looking in the windsheild can't see you." He layed the piglet down gentally on the seat and got out of the truck. Ben had to lean against the truck but he got to the intersection, and stood in the middle of road. Nothing came, but he looked back towards the truck and mouthed, "Stay down."
Hali frowned for a minute before doing what she was told. When she peeked up to see what was going on she saw Ben look back and tell her to stay down. She slid back out of sight and tried to figure out what was going on.
Ben launched himself back just in time to get out of the truck tht flew around the corner. He got to his feet as the truck stopped and several people got out. One man came to Ben and grabbed his shoulders, "Where is it you?" Ben shook his head, "I don't know, It fell from my pocket when I was walking." The man frowned, "Search the truck." Ben bit his lip, then yelled loud and clear, "RUN!" The men started for the truck, faster now knowing that someone was in there.
Hali heard the commotion outside and peaked her head up when Ben yelled, she saw men running towards the truck and blinked a few time before she hopped out of the truck and ran into the corn field on the side of the street. It was smarter than running where they could see her or have an easy shot if they were armed, which they most likely were. She moved through the stalks of corn, careful not to damage or break any of them and give away her path of retreat. When she thought she got far enough away she stopped and listened.... and thought. She left Ben there. In the arms of those of who he was trying to get away from... She had to do something.
The men swore and entered the corn feild, only to come back a couple minutes later shaking their heads. The man who had stayed behind with Ben swore, and shook Ben again, "Tell right now where the flashdrive is and what that girl knows or else we will find her and shoot her pretty little head." The man grabbed Ben's hair and pulled, "You don't want that now do you?" Ben grimaced but said, "I don't know where it is, and I hitched a ride from her." The man spat in Ben's face and hissed, "Lier." The man punched Ben in the stomach, and let him fall to the ground, Ben wasn't in any condition to run anyway. Please, don't come back Hali! He thought.
Hali took a few deep breaths before pushing her way back out of the corner field. It felt like it took forever but finally she could see the road again as she pushed through the last few stalks. She walked calmly over to her truck and leaned against the drivers door, giving a sharp whistle to get their attention. She didn't exactly know what she was doing, just acting on sheer instinct at the moment.
The men looked up astonished, and Ben gasped, his eyes widening. Ben yelled out, "No! Stop, go back they can't find you in there!" The man turned to him, and kicked him effectivly silencing him. A man started foward slowly, as if to see if she would run, then darted foward and twisted her arms around her back painfully. Ben looked up in despair, what could he do? He didn't even know where it was, but she did and if they knew that, it'd be her they'd be going after. The man holding Hali pulled out a gun and pressed it to the side of her head and asked, "Where is it Ben?" Ben tryed to stand, but was kicked down, "I don't know where it is! Let her go!"
Hali winced as the man twisted her arm, she felt the cool metal of the gun against the side of her head and froze. She took a deep breath and assessed their situation. The man stood right behind her, if she- her thoughts were cut off when she watched another man kick Ben. "Stop!" She screamed and struggled in the mans grasp, only causing her to hurt her arm even more.
Ben grimaced and sat up, knowing better than trying to stand. "I'll make you a deal. If - " The man snorted and cut him off, "Like you are in any condition to make a deal." Ben replied, "Yes I am, you can't get the flashdrive without my help. My deal: if you let Hali go, I'll help you. If you don't, I will not help you." The men watched him for a second, then burst out laughing, "How about this? We shoot a hole in one of her fingers for each minute you decide to not help us." Ben's eyes widened, he didn't know where the actual flashdrive was but these men were just bruts, and weren't likely to actually check the flashdrive. Ben took a deep breath, "I'll help." The men nodded and hauled both Hali and Ben into their truck, keeping a gun to both of their heads.
Hali's eyes widened when Ben agreed to help them, she struggled as she was hauled into the truck. "Would you get that d.amn gun away from me! It's not like I can do much of anything." She rolled her eyes and looked to Ben, "Why would you do that..?" She asked, half hissing out the words.
Ben focused on keeping his feet under himself but whispered back, "Just trust me okay?" They were forced into the truck and the men ignored them both, and kept the guns to their heads. The man who got behind the wheel asked Ben where they were going, and Ben gave him directions. They drove for awhile, Ben making it clear he didn't want to talk. Ben stopped the truck on the road about half a mile from Hali's house. As they got out Ben whispered in Hali's ear, "Don't worry."
Hali frowned and looked down at her hands, keeping silent the whole way. She was feeling uneasy. When they stopped on the side of the road, Hali glanced up at Ben. Dont worry, he said... how could she not worry...
The men frowned at Ben and asked, "Well where is it?" Ben shook his head, "We have to go into the woods a little way." Ben started foward, but fell, agonising pain flareing up his leg. He managed not to scream, but knew that it wouldn't be long before the stiches tore out completly. One man sighed and hauled Ben to his feet and supported him as they walked out. By the time they got there, you could see a flash of Hali's barn in the distance, but only if you knew it was there. Ben got on his knees and dug into the soil, eventually digging up a flashdrive, identical to the one he had given Hali.
Hali watched as Ben fell, she jerked forward only to be yanked back again. She waited at the truck uneasily, he must have had some kind of plan up his sleeve or he wouldn't have told her not to worry, right? But... even if he had a plan... did he really think they wouldn't still kill them?
Ben handed them the fake flashdrive and the men inspected it. One of the men leveled a gun at him but Ben said, "Wait." The man arched and eyebrow and the rest looked over at him. "Thats not all I have. Bring the girl or else I won't get it." The men frowned but nodded and spoke into a walki talki. The man still by the truck answered and grabbed Hali's arm without explaination, and walked out to Ben.
Hali heard the buzz of the walki talki and was half dragged by a man into the forest. She saw Ben and the others, one of them had a gun pointed at him and another held what appeared to be a flashdrive..? She looked back to Ben and then looked down at her shoes. What's going on now?
One man asked Ben as Hali was brought over, "So what now, What else do you have?" Ben wordlessly stood and walked towards where Hali's barn was. The men followed and once there, Ben turned to them, "Me and the girl," He said, purposely not saying her name, "We are the only ones who go in here." The men's slow working brains nodded and shoved the two in, cause Ben to fall again, he wouldn't last long. Quickly he stood and pulled Hali close since the door was closed and no one could see them. He whispered in her ear, "Tack up two of your horses and call a friend to take care of the rest. We can ride out of here, they have no mode of tansportation and I doubt they can ride."
((If you don't know horses, then "tack up" means to put on the saddle, bridles, and other tack on.))
