"Let me at least give you a ride? Please?" He says as his eyes change to a mixture of brown and blue, and he twirls his keys in his hands. Nervous, confused, saddened, why was he feeling so many things at once? Usually, he's calm and cool, but now, something had changed, and he didn't understand why, or what it was exactly.
Nicky seemed to shrink, ashamed. She studied the battered toes of her shoes, squeezing the straps of her backpack. She didn't want him to see where she lived, to see just how poor she was. She shuffled nervously, not sure what to say for a moment. "I...I..."
"Its okay, it doesn't matter where or what you live in, I promise I won't judge. I just want to make sure you get home safely" Vergil says as he studies the girls movement and reaction.
Nicky bit her lip as she looked up at him. "Promise?" She asked in a small voice. She shifted slightly, hiding behind her dark hair. She held tighter to her backpack, hardly daring to look up at him.
Vergil nods his head as he agrees. I promise" he says softly and sticks his hand out for the girl. "C'mon, its okay, I won't bite." He slightly jokes, knowing she won't laugh, but tries anyways.
Nicky blinked at him solemnly. She didn't smile, her lips remaining in their serious line. Everything about her seemed to droop, sad. "Okay then." She whispered, not meeting his eyes. "Thank you."
"So, whats your name?" Vergil asks, trying to make some conversation, as the headed towards his car, and once they do reach the vechile, he holds the door open for her.
"Nicky." Nicky mumbled, climbing into the car. She didn't look at him, ashamed. "I can give you directions..."
Vergil closes her door, and gets in the drivers side, "Thats fine, and I like your name, its cute" he says as starts the car and pulls out of the school parking lot
Nicky looked at him, blinking. But she silently buckled up and quickly looked away again. She started to give him directions to her apartment building, directing him through the poorest part of town until they got to the crumbling apartment building that served as her home.
It looked like it should've been condemned a long time ago, but it stayed open. And it was what she called home.
She bit her lip when she saw her dad's car in the parking lot. He was home early, much earlier than usual. Which meant that he was probably drunk, and the hitting would start as soon as she stepped into the tiny, filthy apartment.
But she said nothing.
As he pulls into the parking lot, he looks around the place. "Look, Nicky, if you ever need a ride, or some place to go when you want to escape anything, here's my number" Vergil hands her a pieces of paper with his number on it. "And if those girls, if anyone bullies you again, tell me. I will not put up with it. And if you ever just need someone to talk too, I'm here to listen, and I promise I will not judge" he finishes talking and looks at Nicky and looks for a respond, or some sign that she understands.
Nicky nodded as she looked at the piece of paper. She then looked up at him, eyes wide. No one had done this much for her, no one had ever been so kind to her. "Thank you." She whispered.
Vergil looks back at Nicky and looks her in her eyes. "I mean it Nicky, don't be shy or afraid to call me, I will answer, always. I promise" Vergil says, never breaking away their gaze.
"Promise?" Nicky asked softly. She wanted to duck her eyes away, but didn't at the same time.
"I promise, Nicky." Vergil continues to look into Nicky's eyes as he gently pushed her hair behind her ears and rubs her cheek softly with his thumb.
Nicky instictively flinched when his hand came close to her face. But she relaxed when he just touched her cheek gently. "Thank you." She whispered, pale cheeks going a tiny bit pink.
"Anytime, I--" Immediately Vergil was cut off in the middle of his sentence, when some strange man comes knocking on his window, screaming "Nicky get inside right now!" Vergil quickly says to Nicky "How about I take you away from here for a few more hours? Is that okay with you?"
Nicky looked at him helplessly, fear in her eyes. She looked to the man, her dad, and shrank in her seat. He was clearly drunk and upset, pounding on the window with one hand while the other clutched at a bottle.
She hugged her backpack, pulling her knees up to her chest, her bony frame hiding in her baggy clothes.
"Yes..." She whispered, helpless and scared.
Vergil silently agrees as he quickly speeds off away from the obviously drunken parent. Once away, Vergil asks "Nicky, would you like to stay at my house for a few days? I really dont think its safe for you to go back"
Nicky shook her head quickly. "It's okay. I'm okay. He'll calm down in an hour or two, and everything will be fine." She said in a quiet shaky voice. She hugged herself in her too big, threadbare clothes, looking worn out, stressed and helpless. She hugged herself tighter, not looking at him. "It's okay. I'll be okay."
