Megan cried out as she was jerked back and almost off her feet. She started to shiver not with cold but with fear. She realized with a certainity, she didn't like being the kid that always had to be protected. "Let go of me you little sword-weilding baboon!" She struggled against him, trying to break his hold.
Rachel you wouldn't... His words circled in her head. Slowly something started to register, this wasn't her. This wasn't normal... She straightened her back thinking, It is wrong that I would threaten or hurt Michael. So I won't do that. With this new resolve she started forward, the smoke rising again to above her head. She thought for a minute, this would be too consipicious to simply march in with the smoke trailing her.
It took a moment but the smoke dispersed so that she wasn't so obvious. A part of her started to protest, the act of threatening Michael spuring it into action. This is wrong! It screamed. Her step faultered.
"D-Don't hurt her!" Axon pleaded, stopping abruptly and reaching back to Megan. It was no use, they couldn't run anymore. The fact that the mercenary hadn't already killed Megan was a little consolation, but not much. Maybe he was just using her to get him...
"We'll go with you," Axon spat, holding his arms stiffly at his sides, head slightly lowered. Ethan nodded, moving the blade of his sword away from Megan's neck but still keeping it close. He jerked his head to the left. "This way," Ethan barked, dragging Megan with him. He had overestimated these two, they were no trouble at all.
Michael relaxed as the smoke disapated, but there didn't seem to be any change in Rachel's demeanor. She was still set on doing...whatever it was. Rampage, he thought, a bit shocked by the conclusion he had drawn. It wasn't like her, he just couldn't believe it.
"Rachel, I know you're angry; I'm angry, too! But if we...if we lose, then what's the point?" They had never taken on an enemy this formiddable, and Michael didn't know whether they had a chance. "Just...please, think about this!"
Megan grunted as she was dragged away. She tried to keep her feet under her, scrambling to keep up. She yelled again, "Get off me you manic!" She stomped on his foot and planted an ellbow in his face, ducking out of his grasp. Free, she grabbed Axon's hand and took off again. It wasn't going to last long, they needed a plan, or Michael. Michael! Where are you? Help!
Rachel was starting to hear him and on his requst to think, she started to. Her eyebrows came together and she frowned. Something seemed wrong, something wasn't right. She put a hand to her temple, what was she thinking? She was going to kill Darenx, to put an end to everything. She looked at Michael actually seeing him for a second.
Ethan cursed at the little girl's attack. He had gotten cocky, giving her more leeway than he would a normal hostage, but he wouldn't make that mistake again. After recovering from the initial shock, he ran after Axon and Megan.
Axon followed Megan blindly, wondering if they shouldn't just give up. No, they might kill you anyway. We can't go down without a fight. Even though Megan was running as fast as she could, she couldn't compensate for her short legs. Axon hoisted the girl onto his shoulders, breathing heavily as he ran as fast as he could.
Relieved that Rachel was starting to see reason, Michael relaxed. Megan's cry for help now rang loud and clear in his mind. Megan?!? What's wrong? he answered, reflexively starting to walk in their direction.
He turned back to Rachel, as though just remembering that she was there. "Axon and Megan, they're...they're in trouble," he stammered, starting to feel overwhelmed with everything that was going on.
Megan watched as the boy chased them. She was panting from running so far on so little food. She heard Michael and responded, We're in the woods, weird liquid fire guy chasing us. We need help, don't know what he'll do. Megan watched as Ethan gained on them and she yelled to Axon, "You-know-who heard me!"
Rachel watched as Michael started away and then came back. Her anger broke and she stumbled, barely manging not to fall. Her breath came quickly and she looked at Michael widely, "What happened? What did I do? What do you mean their in trouble?" She paused for a second and shook her head. Once her mind had cleared a little bit she took a deep breath and asked, "Where are they?"
Axon nodded, unable to speak as he ran. He was used to carrying Megan right now, but only when they were playing, not when they were being chased by a superpowered assassin. She seemed heavier, knowing that if he slowed down, they could be killed.
Ethan slowly caught up to them, slashing at Axon's back. Axon tripped over a tree root, causing the sword to slice into his back. The blood loss caused him to slow, and Ethan overtook them easily. The flames on his sword licked at Axon's wound, causing the pain to intensify. "You two are coming with me," he said, a hand clutched tightly around Megan's small throat.
"This way," Michael said, running in the direction of Megan's voice. It didn't seem to be coming from Darenx's headquarters, which was only a little comforting. Megan, you still there? he called out hopefully.
